Stars vs. Capitals
The Dallas Stars take their three game losing streak into Washington on Monday night to face the white hot Washington Capitals. This game has all the makings of a blowout.
The Dallas Stars sit in eleventh place in the Western Conference standings, six points back of eighth place Detroit for the final playoff spot. The Stars are probably wishing that they were in the Eastern Conference as their 68 points would be good enough for eighth place in that Conference.
The Dallas Stars cannot blame their offense for their 11th place standing in the Western Conference – it is ranked 11th in the NHL and they can’t blame their defense which is also middle of the pack in the NHL. What they can blame is their terrible road record. The Stars are a dismal 10-16-7 this season on the road and are 6-20 in their last 26 away from home. If you can’t win on the road, your team is not going to be successful!
Goaltender Marty Turco escaped a rumored trade on Wednesday but has given up nine goals in the two games that he has played since the Olympic break. He gave way to backup Kari Lehtonen on Saturday only to watch him give up six goals against the Penguins. Brad Richards has been OK with seven points in his last six games and Loui Eriksson finally woke up with a goal Thursday after going pointless in his last four games. The Dallas Stars are a middle of the pack team and shouldn’t provide much of a challenge to the revamped and stacked Washington Capitals on Monday night.
The Washington Capitals are a nightmare to play against right now, especially at home. The Caps currently own the best home record in the NHL with an impressive 25-3-3 record. They have won all three games since the Olympic break and show no signs of slowing down.
Even though Alex Ovechkin is not scoring (just one assist since the Olympic break), others are stepping up and providing the necessary offense for the league’s best team. Newcomers Scott Walker and Eric Belanger have both hit the score sheet since their deadline acquisition and Mike Knuble has continued his impressive campaign. The League’s number one offense boasts eleven players with at least ten goals.
Dallas has owned Washington lately, going 10-4-1 in their last 15 meeting, but don’t expect that trend to continue. Washington is too balanced, too powerful and too good on home ice to let a poor road team like the Stars interrupt their thirteen game home winning streak.
