Buffalo Sabres @ Washington Capitals

Wednesday, December 23, 7:00 p.m. ET

The Sabres had their detractors this offseason – after all, they made no splash in free agency and seriously lacked size and strength at forward – but the season is almost half over and Sabres lead the Northeast division. They’re doing it with shutdown defense from Tyler Myers and phenomenal goaltending from Ryan Miller. We have to take them seriously, even when they travel to Washington, where the Capitals are 10-2-3 this season. After all, they shut the Caps out two weeks ago.

You know what you get with Washington – absolutely explosive scoring from Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Semin and Nicklas Backstrom, a dynamic power play and a lack of depth on defense. In the end, it’s tough to bet against the Caps at home. Even if Buffalo sicks big Myers on Ovechkin, that leaves Semin and Backstrom free to roam. Sports Betting at the SportsbookThe Sabres do better offensively against slower teams and the Caps certainly don’t fit that bill. Pick Washington but don’t be surprised if this game falls under the projected total.

Sportsbook pick: Capitals

Chicago Blackhawks @ Detroit Red Wings

Wednesday, December 23, 7:30 p.m. ET

These aren’t your granddaddy’s Red Wings or even the Wings of last year. As if the Wings weren’t already at a disadvantage after losing Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson and Jiri Hudler to free agency in the offseason, they’ve watched in horror as Johan Franzen, Niklas Kronwall, Valtteri Filppula, Dan Clearly and Henrik Zetterberg have gone down with injuries. Bettors shouldn’t get trapped into wagering on last year’s team.

It’s not even a hot streak anymore; the Hawks have simply been hot all season. They’ve won four straight and are 7-2 in December. Most recently, they shut the Wings out on Sunday night. Since they usually split up Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, they almost always roll two legitimate scoring lines. Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook may be the league’s most effective defensive tandem. The only real question for the Hawks entering the season was goaltending and Cristobal Huet has answered the bell this season.

Some bettors may worry that the Hawks will be weary after battling the Sharks the previous night but even a tired Chicago team may be better than the group Detroit is currently icing. Pick Chicago, which at least provides decent value on the road.

Sportsbook pick: Blackhawks
