Two teams that were expected to challenge for the Western Conference title this season take to the ice on Tuesday night in what is the marquee matchup of a busy night of NHL Betting action. The Sharks have risen up the standings after an underwhelming first half of the season while the Wings have been that elite squad that everyone expected all season long.

The San Jose Sharks have finally started to live up to expectation. They are suddenly fourth in the Western Conference and one point out of the Pacific Division lead. The Sharks are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games and an incredible 12-2-1 in their last 15.

San Jose has been one of the most inconsistent offensive team in the NHL and continues to be so even though they have ascended up the Western Conference standings. Devin Setoguchi has been the hottest Shark and had a hat trick in his last outing. He has 12 points in his last 12 games. Joe Pavelski has seven points in his last six games and Logan Couture has two points in his last two games. Where are Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley you ask? Struggling – both have two points in their last six games! Dan Boyle is pointless in his last six games.

The Sharks turnaround has as much to do with defense as it does offense. Antti Niemi has emerged as the unquestioned number one goaltender and is 11-2-1 in his last 14 games with a 1.77 goals against average. Niemi is 3-0-0 in his last three games in Detroit with a 1.63 goals against average.

The Detroit Red Wings are as advertised – they are good, they are deep and they are as well coached as any team in the NHL. They have won five games in a row and are 7-3-0 in the last 10 games. Detroit sits 10 points up in the Central Division and is just five points back of Vancouver in the Western Conference.

Detroit is the second ranked offense in the NHL with an average of 3.3 goals per game. The offense is healthy and they are lethal once again! Henrik Zetterberg has eight points in five games, Pavel Datsyuk has seven points in five games, Todd Bertuzzi has six goals in five games and Dan Cleary has six points in five games. Impressive for sure!

The Wings defense has been up and down all season long. Presently they rank 17th in the NHL and give up an average of 2.8 goals per game. Jimmy Howard has shaken a slump and is 2-0-0 in his last two games with a 1.44 goals against average. Against San Jose, Howard is 3-1-1 in his last five games with a 2.56 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: San Jose is 17-9-4 on the road this season but is just 7-20-1 in their last 28 games in Detroit. The Sharks are 12-2-1 in their last 15 games overall. The Detroit Red Wings are 17-8-4 at home this season and have won five straight games overall. The Wings are 2-6 in their last eight games against San Jose.

Pick: Detroit Red Wings -140
