ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

Montreal played the perfect road game in the first two periods of Game 1 before the Bruins caught their stride and looked like the better team in the third period and in overtime. Game 1 was tight as expected – a double overtime affair with PK Subban and Carey Price emerging as the determining factors.

Will Montreal go home up 2-0 in the series or will the Bruins bounce back and beat what has been their kryptonite the last couple of seasons – the Habs?

For the Montreal Canadiens to have a chance in their series with the Bruins Carey Price is going to have to be the difference – case in point – Game 1 on Thursday night. Simply put Price is the reason the game went to overtime and ultimately the reason the Habs walked away with the win. Price made 48 huge saves in the game – Montreal only had 33 shots total themselves. The Habs also went 2-for-3 on the power play while the Bruins were o-for-2.

Four goals against Tuukka Rask has to be seen as a huge confidence boost for the Habs but Boston generating 13 takeaways is reason for concern. Nine days off could be an excuse for the giveaways and the 51 shots surrendered…

Or it could simply have been the adjustments that the Bruins coaching staff made as the game wore on. Boston outshot the Habs 14-6 in the third period and the first overtime period of Game 1 – they really came on after they figured out what the Canadiens were hoping to do. They used their depth and their physicality to dominate the Habs throughout the second half of the game.

Tuukka Rask had a rare bad night between the pipes for the Bruins in Game 1 – it is hard to imagine him having two unflattering efforts in a row. Rask was thoroughly outplayed by his counterpart Thursday night – something he will be out to change in Game 2.

A few trends to consider:
• MON are 9-2 in their last 11 road games.
• MON are 16-5 in their last 21 overall.
• MON are 23-9 in their last 32 vs. Atlantic.
• Over is 11-2-4 in BOS last 17 Sat. games.
• BOS are 23-6 in their last 29 Sat. games.
• BOS are 40-14 in their last 54 home games.
• MON are 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.

The Montreal Canadiens have yet to lose in the playoffs this year – five games and five wins. They have now won seven of their last eight games against the Bruins overall hand have won three straight in Boston heading into Game 2.

But watching Game 1 revealed the fact that the Bruins found something in Montreal’s game that they can exploit. The law of averages has to catch up to Montreal – they HAVE to lose sometime in the playoffs and they HAVE to fall to the Bruins at TD Banknorth Garden this season. I think it happens Saturday.

You may not like the price but a small payday is better than no payday at all!

Pick: Boston Bruins -196 (Feelin Lucky? Bet the Puckline -1.5)
