Rangers vs Canadiens NHL Line & Handicapping

Original 6 Matchup Highlight NHL Saturday Schedule – Rangers Visit Habs

The New York Rangers head to Montreal Saturday night of play in a building that they have had more than their share of problems in the last few seasons. Montreal shut out the Rangers in both meetings at Bell Center last year and has now won eight straight over the Rangers on home ice.

Montreal is coming off a shootout win over Columbus Friday night while the Rangers will play for the first time since losing 3-2 to the Devils on Tuesday night. The Rangers have turned around a terrible start to their season and have won six of eight games while the Habs have stumbled to a 2-3-2 in their last seven.

The New York Rangers have been playing some better hockey of late despite Rick Nash, Dominic Moore and Taylor Pyatt still being out of the lineup due to injury. The offense has stepped up a bit but is still averaging just 2.28 goals per game this year.

Ryan McDonagh has two goals and three assists during a four-game point streak for the Rangers and Mats Zuccarello has one goal and three assists during a four-game point streak. Chris Kreider has also been good scoring 10 points in his last 11 games.

That said it isn’t likely going to be the offense that leads to victory Saturday night – the defense is going to have to step up.

But nothing shows the struggles that New York has had in Montreal better than the numbers that all-world goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has put up. Lundqvist is 4-5-2 with a 3.87 goals-against average and .876 save percentage at Bell Centre.

Cam Talbot may actually get the start over Lundqvist Saturday – he is 3-0-0 in his last three starts with a 1.95 GAA and .935 save percentage.

The Montreal Canadiens played last night and recorded a much needed win versus Columbus. Thankfully for Montreal it was the struggling David Desharnais that showed up in the shootout and finally made a difference for this team. Montreal hadn’t been playing all that well going 1-3-2 in six games prior to last night but against Columbus the Habs showed signs of breaking out.

Lars Eller and Alex Galchenyuk each have two goals and two assists in the Canadiens’ past three games – the only two Habs that have been playing to their potential for a Montreal team that is averaging 2,55 goals per game.

René Borque and Brian Gionta are pointless in their last four games but both played well last night and like the rest of the team showed signs of ending their slumber.

Carey Price’s has owned the Rangers. He’s 6-0-1 with a 0.99 goals-against average over his last seven matchups, posting four straight shutouts with 103 total saves.

He will get the start Saturday after having Friday off and should be very confident ahead of this matchup.

Betting Prediction

:

A few trends to consider:

• Under is 41-13-12 in NYR last 66 Sat. games.
• NYR are 6-2 in their last 8 overall.
• Under is 26-11-14 in NYR last 51 road games.
• Under is 7-2-1 in MON last 10 overall.
• Under is 46-17-3 in MON last 66 Sat. games.
• NYR are 1-10 in the last 11 meetings in Montreal.
• Home team is 20-7 in the last 27 meetings.

Montreal has shut out the Rangers five of the last times they’ve played in Montreal and Carey Price hasn’t allowed a goal at home to the New York Rangers in almost three years. Montreal has outscored the Rangers 30-7 over the last eight home meetings. Translation – total domination!

The Canadiens played last night while the Rangers have been off since Tuesday. That could be a difference! But, the Habs have absolutely beaten down the Rangers on home ice.

The Bell Center is New York’s kryptonite – I expect more of the same Saturday.

Pick: Montreal Canadiens -126
