Blackhawks vs. Flyers Game Six Preview

The NHL Hockey season could be over on Wednesday night. The Chicago Blackhawks could end a 49 year Cup drought with a win in Philadelphia but they will have to do it against a pesky resilient Flyers team. The Flyers are 9-1 on home ice this post season and Michael Leighton is 6-0 on home ice so far in the playoffs.

The Chicago Blackhawks juggled their lines before Game 5 and it made a huge difference. Jonathan Toews played with Marion Hossa and Thomas Kopetski, Patrick Kane played with Patrick Sharp and Dustin Byfuglien was moved to a third line. Suddenly the Hawks had three potent lines!

It sure appears that Coach Joel Quenville figured something out about the Flyers.

Chicago got outhit in Game 5 but Byfuglien’s play almost made us overlook that point. Byfuglien was dominant in the Game and may have finally woken up in the series. It’s a good thing that offense is clicking because Philadelphia is playing hard and Antti Niemi is not stealing any games for the Hawks at all.

The Philadelphia Flyers are a different team on home ice thankfully.

They did not look good in Chicago and Michael Leighton was plain awful. The Flyers were totally blitzed by a better and hungrier team on Sunday night – a stark contrast to the Flyers team that we saw in Games 3 and 4.

If there is one player that the Flyers have to get going is Jeff Carter. He has one empty net goal in the series and is better than he has been playing. The second line of Hartnell, Briere and Leino has been the savior for the Flyers and should continue to be so.

The Flyers need to get back to their physical hockey, their furious forecheck and their smart decision making.

They can do it offensively – they’ve proven so.

Defensively, Wednesday night was a disaster. I hope that Chris Pronger got the game puck and threw it in the garbage. He was a minus five on the night and was in the box for another goal against. He was miserable as were his mates. Michael Leighton should get the start.

He’s been awesome on home ice and he’s been remarkable the game after getting pulled.

Game 6 is a tough one to call. It is interesting that the oddmakers have Philadelphia as the favorites. I have faith that Peter Laviolette will use the extra day off to develop a game plan for success on Wednesday night.

The Flyers are too good at home and too prideful to let the opposition hoist the Cup in their building.
