This will be the first meeting between these two teams of the 2014-15 season and the first time they’ve played in more than a calendar year.

The Oilers have been steadily improving of late and actually have a better 10 game stretch going (5-5-0) than the Penguins (4-4-2).

Yes, I understand that Pittsburgh got loser points twice and both teams have amassed 10 points over 10 games but the Oilers have won five while Pittsburgh has won only four, so by my count that’s better.

Pittsburgh

That mediocre 10 game stretch mentioned above has mired the Pens in a spot where I’m sure they don’t feel too comfortable.

This team could be running away with the Metropolitan Division but they have just not been able to beat either New York team this season and they have had a tough time finding consistency for a few months now.

Fantasy hockey players who own Sidney Crosby have to be gnashing their teeth right now as the league’s best player has been anything but of late with just four points in his last 10 games. Before that slide, Crosby was operating at a 1.3 point per game clip, but since has been sluggish at a pace of just 0.4 points per game, almost a full point per game less.

No wonder the Penguins are sliding. Add to that the absence of Evgeni Malkin and this team does not seem so scary right now.

Fear not though Pens fans/Crosby owners. Form is temporary, quality is permanent, and Crosby is capable of being the league’s most dominant player and will return to that level before the season ends. The defensively inept Oilers could be a perfect team for Crosby to bust out against and get his team rolling again.

Oilers

Defensive pitfalls aside, this team can score goals and have been doing it with some consistency of late. Included in the last five wins for the Oilers are a 5-2 win over the Blackhawks, a win by the same score over the Islanders and 5-4 shootout wins over both Washington and San Jose.

That’s four quality teams that are all in races for the tops in their respective divisions.

It’s hard to say whether this is a case of teams taking Edmonton lightly and getting caught flat, but the Oilers will take it as they’ve been getting some wins and at least a small light at the end of the tunnel for a team that has been awful for a long while.

Edmonton will likely still find themselves in a draft lottery position come year’s end, but some wins over quality opponents is a ray of hope that this team desperately needs.

[dfads params=’groups=64161&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Pittsburgh is a bit of a fragile team right now and the Oilers definitely have the speed and talent to keep up with the Pens so this is a game where Edmonton could really give themselves some confidence by adding another quality opponent to their kill list.

Penguins vs. Oilers 4* Free Pick

The Penguins have been very unimpressive lately, with just two goals scored in their last three games. Edmonton isn’t exactly a shut down team, but if this turns into a track meet, Pittsburgh could be in some trouble with the way the Oilers have been scoring of late.

This comes down to timing and I think the timing is right for the Oilers who are the home underdog.

Pittsburgh is starting a trip out west without a lot of confidence and as bad as the Oilers look on paper they’re just playing better hockey right now. Take Edmonton in this one.
