The Bruins have struggled mightily on offense this season – not a good sign with the explosive Pens coming to town. Injuries will also put the Bruins up against the wall.

Will the Bruins be able to overcome the adversity or have the Penguins caught them at just the right time?

[dfads params=’groups=64160&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Let’s break it down.

Pens

The Pittsburgh Penguins enter Monday night’s clash on an uncharacteristic two game losing streak – both losses came against the New York Islanders over the weekend. The Penguins are still one of the top scoring teams in the NHL – 3.53 goals per game but some troubling trends have emerged out of the weekend.

Let’s start with Sidney Crosby who was held pointless for the second straight game on Saturday. You’d have to think that a blowup game is imminent but he has just four points in his last nine games against Boston. Next is a struggling power play that has gone just 1-for-10 lately.

The Pens are still operating at a 33% clip – like Crosby you’d have to think that the Pens are due for a breakout sooner than later.

The good news for Pittsburgh is that a few of their stars have been playing very well. Evgeni Malkin scored Saturday and has two goals and four assists on a four-game point streak, Patric Hornqvist has three points in two games, Steve Downie has three points in three games and Nick Spaling has two points in two.

Monday’s probable starter between the pipes Marc-Andre Fleury has also been good lately. He is 6-1-1 with a 1.82 GAA and .938 save percentage in his last eight games played. In Boston, he’s 5-2-2 with a 2.27 GAA in 10 career games.

Bruins

The Boston Bruins have won eight of their last 11 games but have done so in rather unspectacular fashion – they are getting it done against the lesser teams in the NHL but are struggling against the top tier teams – Pittsburgh is definitely a top team.

Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand, Chris Kelly and David Krejci are still injured, leaving the team to start a slew of rookies.

Due to the lack of cohesion in the lineup the Bruins have struggled to find the back of the net – just nine goals combined during a 3-3-0 stretch. Milan Lucic is pointless in his last five games, Reilly Smith hasn’t hit the score sheet in six games and Dougie Hamilton has been shut out in his last four games.

With a patch-work lineup Boston absolutely needs more from their regulars – especially against a high scoring team like the Pens.

We know that Tuukka Rask will do his job – he is 6-2-0 this month with a 1.89 goals-against average and is 6-1-0 in his last seven starts including playoffs versus Pittsburgh with a terrific .956 save percentage over that span.

NHL Gambling Trends

• PIT are 10-3 in their last 13 overall.
• PIT are 6-2 in their last 8 road games.
• Under is 15-6 in PIT last 21 Mon. games.
• BOS are 21-5 in their last 26 vs. Metropolitan.
• BOS are 39-14 in their last 53 home games.
• BOS are 8-3 in their last 11 overall.
• Under is 9-2-2 in the last 13 meetings in Boston.
• Under is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings.

The Bruins have won six of the last seven meetings between the teams and they have won four straight at home in the series.

To beat the Penguins, a team has to be at their absolute best.

But the Boston team we will see Monday night will be extremely undermanned.

Pittsburgh Penguins -120

With the Bruins clearly not, this looks like an easy win for the visiting team. Sid snaps his slump, the power play gets rolling and Pittsburgh records a rare win in Boston!
