Will the Washington Capitals ever lose another hockey game? The streak stands at 11 and they’ve barely even been in jeopardy during a game over the dominant run. Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom have been unstoppable all year but Alexander Semin is playing outstanding hockey too and Jose Theodore is playing his best hockey in goal since his MVP 2001-02 season.
Since the Caps are a force and have won four of five against the Rangers, they obviously make a ton of sense tonight. That said, I’m…feeling…lucky. My gut tells me the streak ends tonight.
Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist is 9-4-2 against the Caps in his career despite a 2.81 goals against average over that span; his fellow Rangers seem to step up their offensive support when Washington comes to town.
There’s also the Olli Jokinen factor. In the end, he’s probably a horrible linemate for Marian Gaborik, as both players prefer to be the primary puck carrier. Jokinen was also a bad match for Jarome Iginla but many bettors forget that Olli enjoyed a brief surge after the Flames acquired him last year, scoring eight goals in his first six games before plunging into a massive slump. I could see a similar early explosion from Jokinen based on the excitement of new surroundings.
Logic doesn’t dictate a Ranger victory but an 11-game winning streak has to end soon enough and the Rangers are at home.
