The Oilers are beyond woeful right now; they’ve lost a ridiculous 15 of their last 16 games and are 0-7 this month. Most betting sharps and pundits saw the struggles coming, as the Oilers are a one-dimensional team with lots of speedy, finesse forwards and nothing else. The closest thing they have to a power forward, Dustin Penner, was the team’s lone bright spot in October and November but has just two goals in seven January games and is a minus-eight over that span.
The Canucks have lost three of four but last Saturday’s 6-2 win over Pittsburgh showed that they’re too good to slump for long. Led by NHL scoring leader Henrik Sedin and his breakout season, the Canucks have become an offensive juggernaut. There’s no one happier about that than Roberto Luongo.
He’s still doing his part, helping Vancouver allow the fifth fewest goals in the league this year, but he’s backed up by Vancouver’s fifth-ranked offense and power play.
This isn’t a game you want to overthink because of the divisional rivalry. The Canucks are a much better team.
They’ve also won three straight over Edmonton by a combined 13-4 margin.
