The Tennessee Titans got buried in the snow in Foxborough a couple of weeks ago and stayed there, going down to embarrassing 59-0 defeat and moving into a bye week under a black cloud. Things have gotten a little more hairy since. Jeff Fisher shows up at a charity event wearing a Peyton Manning jersey, saying that he wanted to be associated with a winner. Owner Bud Adams insisted that Vince Young be inserted as the starting quarterback, which made Fisher look bad. Fisher then relented, announcing that Young would start this game, which is actually the right thing to do fo their chances in NFL betting.

When last seen as the starter, Young was begging out of a game with an injury and wouyld not go back in. He had a tantrum on the sidelines, lost the respect of his coach and teammates, etc. We don’t have to rehash the whole story. Those teammates who have spoken up this week insist that the embarrassing incident with Young has been forgotten, and I’m sure that is in the interest of just moving forward and trying to have a shot to win this game. Fisher is probably thinking about where he might be employed next year, especially if things don’t get a whole lot better, because every job situation in the NFL gets stale sooner or later (unless you’re George Halas, who owns the team) and because a coach of his stature shouldn’t have to endure that kind of thing from an owner (he’s not Jim Zorn, after all).

Please remember that Tennessee won its first ten games last year, and finished with the best record in the NFL (they are 1-5 ATS in NFL betting this year). I’m saying that to suggest that they can come back and challenge for a playoff spot, though Young almost helped them accomplish that after a hideous start in his rookie season. I’m saying that to illustrate that no matter how bad things have been, they still have some pride, and they are not going to take a 59-0 loss lying down. There have been monumental problems in the secondary with all the injury problems, but that having been said, this may not be the worst opponent for them to face in their state.

Yes, David Garrard threw for 305 yards against them in the first meeting, a 37-17 Jags win. But I don’t know if he is going to do that again, and the Titans have a real chance to have Cortland Finnegan, Nick Harper and Vincent Fuller back in the lineup. One thing Tennessee has managed to do is slow down the run (3.4 ypc allowed) on those occasions when they’ve been run against, so Jacksonville’s bread and butter may not have a picnic.

Vince Young is going to add another dimension with his mobility against a Jaguar team that only has five sacks. Chris Johnson averages 6.2 yards a carry. The conditions may not be bad for the Titans to put one on the board. We’re laying the points with Tennessee, the three-point favorite in the BetUS NFL betting odds.

Everyone keeps waiting for the Titans to show and play like last year’s team. Unfortunately I think that ship has sailed. Do not look for Vince Young to provide a spark as he will struggle after such a long layoff.
