Week 2 Vikings vs. Lions NFL Predictions

The Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions will both be trying to pick up a win on Sunday when they battle at Ford Field in Detroit Michigan. We preview and pick this week 2 game that has the Vikings picked to win by 10…

NFL Week 2 – Favre and Peterson will Feast on the Lions this Weekend

Minnesota Vikings (1-0) vs. Detroit Lions (0-1)
Sunday, September 20 th
Ford Field, Detroit — 1:00pm EST
NFL Betting Line: Minnesota -10 (46.5)

The Lions are winless in 2009 so far, and that fact will hold true after Week 2 is in the bag. After allowing Drew Brees to throw for six touchdowns, the Lions are inviting Brett Favre to Ford Field to try and do the same. To make matters worse, the Vikings present a much more dynamic attack, boasting the league’s leading MVP candidate, Adrian Peterson.

If you think Detroit has a chance because they’re playing at home, then think again. Detroit is 1-8 ATS in their last 9 road games and are just 1-13 SU in their last 14 against Minnesota.

Brett Favre was used sparingly in the Vikings’ offensive gameplan, which is a damn good thing if you consider Favre’s age, and the growing concern over his torn bicep from last year. Going 14-of-21 with 110 yards, and one touchdown was the kind of production you can expect from Favre, whose main duty will be to hand the ball off to All Day for most of the work.

Speaking of Adrian Peterson, the third-year player from Oklahoma rushed to the front of all running-backs with 180 yards and 3 touchdowns. Expect more of the same as the Vikings try to assert a dominant offense that will ease the pressure off the secondary by forcing teams to throw. Peterson likely won’t see 25-carries per game, as Chester Taylor’s presence offers some relief. The Vikings’ handled the Browns, and will dominate the Lions to show that they are truly an NFC Championship contender.

For their part, the Lions are still a long ways away from being competitive. Stafford is still looking for his first passing touchdown, and posted three ghastly picks against an average New Orleans secondary. Throwing for 16 completions on 37 attempts did nothing to bolster the Lions’ hopes of going 8-8 SU this season, and he averaged just 5.5 yards per completion.

Calvin Johnson showed his big game ability by gaining 90-yards on just three catches. He was targeted 13 times, but a lack of a proper compliment is going to hinder his attempts at getting open. And Kevin Smith is horrible. He put up just 1.3 yards per carry last week against New Orleans.

Until the Detroit defense steps up, don’t be scared to stay away from the Lions with big spread deficits. This is definitely a work in progress worth tracking, but it’s not worth backing them against one of the NFC’s most well-rounded teams.
