Week 13 NFL Lines: Eagles vs. Falcons

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Sunday Football Week 13 NFL clash between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons..

NFL Betting – Shorthanded Falcons No Match For Eagles

The Atlanta Falcons will be very shorthanded this weekend as the Philadelphia Eagles visit. They’ll be without their starting quarterback and starting running back, which is already more starters than they missed all of last year.

Last season, the Falcons only missed one starter for any games as left tackle Sam Baker missed 11 starts. This year has been a very different story as the Falcons, who are already without Harry Douglas, William Moore, Brian Williams and Michael Schneck for the season, and have missed Ovie Mughelli, Jerious Norwood, Michael Turner and Brian Finneran for multiple games, will now be without Turner and Matt Ryan for this week.

That’s a lot to overcome for any team but the Falcons were able to do it against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week thanks to a miracle last-second touchdown. It will be a little different this week as the Philadelphia Eagles come to town.

Eagles offense versus Falcons defense

In the NFL, sometimes you have to scratch a little further than the surface to examine matchups and for the Falcons, this is a really bad one.

The Falcons defense leads the NFL is passing plays allowed of 20 yards or longer and they’ll be in tough this week since the Eagles are a pass-oriented offense.

Even though the Eagles will be without wideout DeSean Jackson this week, they still have plenty of depth at receiver to exploit a secondary that continues to give up big plays.

Last week, rookie quarterback Josh Freeman completed 20-of-29 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. That bodes very well for Donovan McNabb and the Eagles offense this week.

Falcons offense versus Eagles defense

Just like when Falcons defense is on the field, this matchup also doesn’t favor the Falcons.

The weakness in the Eagles defense is the rush defense while their secondary is loaded with cover corners that most teams would rather avoid. In most cases, the Falcons would probably find a good deal of success pounding the ball with Turner and controlling the clock. Unfortunately, Turner is out.

The Falcons are left to attack with backup quarterback Chris Redman and backup running backs Jason Snelling and Jerious Norwood. Redman doesn’t really present too much of a threat and the Eagles are going to send lots of blitzes to see if they can rattle him. Granted, he is experienced, but he will have to make big plays consistently for the Falcons to score points.

Outlook & Pick
From top to bottom, this is just a bad matchup for the Falcons. They barely beat the 1-10 Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home last week working with backups. Surely they’ll have a rough time this week.

This game will be one-sided as the Eagles should win rather easily.

Pick: Eagles -5

One reply on “Week 13 NFL Lines: Eagles vs. Falcons”

Through the first half the inability of the Falcons to run the ball without Michael Turner is a glaring weakness. The only positive for Atlanta is Philly is only scoring field goals and not TD’s keepin this one close.
