New York Jets vs. Detroit Lions preview

Overreaction is the name of the game in New York, and each Jets win is viewed as a major step toward the Super Bowl and each loss a move toward Armageddon. So it’s understandable that near-panic set in after the Jets’ shutout loss at home to Green Bay last weekend. Fans who have seen the Jets shot down year after year after depressing year are concerned that the Super Bowl promised to them may not be a sure thing after all.

After spending most of the first two months of the season atop the AFC East, the 5-2 NYJ are now staring up at New England, and this week face a Lions team that has a poor record (2-5) but oodles of confidence after outlasting the Redskins last weekend. Detroit has talent, and Jim Schwartz has the Lions playing hard. They have been beaten decisively only once (at Minnesota, 28-14, in Week 3, and who would you like if the Lions and Vikings were playing on Sunday?), they have scored more points (183) than they have allowed (165), and no team has given the Giants a tougher game in New York this year.

After years of floundering, the Lions finally have offensive stability. Matthew Stafford gives them the franchise quarterback that they have lacked, Jahvid Best and Kevin Smith are on-the-rise backs, and Calvin Johnson could soon surpass Andre Johnson as the most talented wideout in the league, if he hasn’t already. And the offensive line has stepped it up, too.

So the Jets have plenty to worry about as they hit the Rust Belt. New York is averaging only 22.7 a game, and the Jets have to be concerned about a group of wideouts that dropped a handful of passes in the loss to Green Bay.

Also, red flags have been raised as LaDainian Tomlinson’s numbers have started to slip after cresting against Buffalo in Week 4.

NFL Trends:

NY Jets are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of the NY Jets last 6 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Detroit’s last 5 games at home
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Detroit’s last 6 games
NY Jets are 8-1 SU in their last 9 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 6 of the NY Jets last 7 games on the road
Detroit is 4-2 SU in their last 6 games when playing NY Jets
Detroit is 8-15 ATS in its last 23 games at home

The picks: Detroit’s defense has not arrived yet, and the Jets will no doubt be spending all week trying to repair a passing game that was wretched against the Packers last week.

The Jets have several manageable games on the docket (Detroit, Cleveland, Houston and Cincinnati) before the AFC East game of the year Dec. 6 in New England, and getting the offense working is Job One.

Taking the Over on this one with a heavy hit.
