Miami Dolphins vs. Baltimore Ravens preview

Do you get the feeling that something is amiss with the Baltimore Ravens?

They come of their bye week in first place in the AFC North. They own victories over a couple of heavyweights (the Jets and Steelers). They took the Patriots into overtime in New England before losing. Except for Todd Heap, they appear healthy.

Yet . . . Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

The Ravens’ defense has dipped into good-but-not-great territory, falling to 10th overall after finishing third last season. Much of that has to do with the puzzling overtime victory over the Bills in which Buffalo moved up and down the field for 514 total yards before expiring. And while Joe Flacco is putting up numbers similar to 2009’s, his body language tells another story and you wonder if he and the coaching staff are on the same page.

All of this may create the smallest of openings for the 4-3 Dolphins, who are undefeated on the road this season and desperately need this victory to stay in the AFC East race – both New England (6-1) and the Jets (5-2) are road favorites.

The Dolphins have offensive problems of their own. They were life and death to break 20 against a poor Bengals defense last weke, and if the season ended today their MVP might be placekicker Rob Carpenter (18 field goals in 7 games). The vertical passing game that figured to blossom with the arrival of Brandon Mashall has yet to materialize.

NFL Trends:

The total has gone OVER in 4 of Miami’s last 5 games when playing on the road against Baltimore
Baltimore is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Baltimore’s last 6 games at home
Miami is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games on the road
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Miami’s last 6 games on the road
Miami is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games when playing on the road against Baltimore
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Baltimore’s last 5 games when playing at home against Miami
Baltimore is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games

The picks: The Dolphins’ road split (4-0 away from home, 0-3 in Miami) can probably be written off as just one of those things, and to a man the players would tell you that they prefer to play in Florida. But Baltimore is one of the best teams in the league playing after its bye week, and will concentrate on slamming the door on Miami’s ground game.

Wouldn’t bet the grocery money on this one, but a small play on the Ravens looks like the call here.

A companion hit on the under would makes sense only if the number goes to 41.
