2011 NFL Football Power Ratings

Each week during the heart of the NFL season, and once or twice during the NFL Preseason, we’ll gather the troops around the roundtable and hash out the NFL Power rankings. We check out the stats, looks at the records, and, most importantly, we take a close, close look at the heart of each team.

Best performance Week 3 – Bills over the Raiders. We now know they play hard, they can score and they don’t get intimidated when they fall behind.
Worst performance Week 3 – Eagles losing to Giants. Eagles DBs need to learn how to tackle.
Best game Week 4 – Detroit (3-0) at Dallas (2-1). Short week for the Boys, but they’re at home. Chance for Lions to continue to chow down on prey as they look way ahead to Green Bay game in late November.
Worst game Week 4 – Minnesota (0-3) at Kansas City (0-3). How the semi-pmighty have fallen.

  1. Green Bay Packers (3-0) – See that TV feature on Greg Jennings catching two footballs at once? Awesome.
  2. Detroit Lions (3-0) – Nick Fairley should be back for this weekend’s game against Dallas. Coal to Newcastle.
  3. Baltimore Ravens (2-1) – Ravens averaging more than five yards on every running play. That won’t keep up, but it’s still impressive.
  4. Buffalo Bills (3-0) – Three games in, and the Bills have more points than the Patriots, have allowed fewer points than the Patriots, and have beaten the Patriots after being down 21-0. Something’s fishy here in the AFC East.
  5. New England Patriots (2-1) – Memo to Chad Ochocinco: When Tom Brady throws you the ball, you better catch it. Doug Gabriel, Donald Hayes, Joey Galloway and Reche Caldwell thought otherwise, and their names are now on milk cartons.
  6. Houston Texans (2-1) – No team has ever given up 40 or more points in a regular season game and gone on to win the Super Bowl that season. I don’t know if that’s true, but it sounds good.
  7. New Orleans Saints (2-1) – Repeat after me: No matter how high the number goes, never never never take the under on a Saints game.
  8. New York Jets (2-1) – Jets defense has sunk to 31st in the league in rushing yards allowed. Think Ray Rice has noticed that?
  9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1) – First place in the NFC South. 0-3 Indy coming to town for prime time on Monday night. Rays may get the wild card. Life is good these days in the Tampa/St. Pete area.
  10. Oakland Raiders (2-1) – Chance to beat Jets and Patriots back-to-back at home. But secondary is hurting – not good when an angry Tom Brady is headed west.
  11. New York Giants (2-1) – With Eagles scuffling, Giants figure they might actually have a shot in the crippled NFC East.
  12. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1) – Yes, a win is a win. But unless they figure out a way to run the ball anything close to what they have in the past, they are going to struggle.
  13. Dallas Cowboys (2-1) – Curious quote from Tony Romo after the win over Washington: “As long as I don’t turn up in the morgue tomorrow we’re going to be all right.”
  14. San Diego Chargers (2-1) – Antonio Gates has an injured foot. Chargers say he just needs to play through the pain. That’s always easy when it’s someone else’s pain. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
  15. Washington Redskins (2-1) – Wait a minute. I thought that in today’s NFL you win if you hold the other team to field goals.
  16. Atlanta Falcons (1-2) – The loss to the Bucs may signify a changing of the guard in the NFC South. Changings of the guard are never good when you’re the defending division champion.
  17. Tennessee Titans (2-1) – Kenny Britt lost for the season (ACL). Tough break. Plus, Britt has off-field problems and nothing good ever happens when he has time on his hands.
  18. Philadelphia Eagles (1-2) – Let’s see if we have this straight. Complaining that the refs are ignoring late hits on him, Michael Vick is playing the victim. Certain irony to that, no?
  19. Chicago Bears (1-2) – Lovie Smith is preaching patience as the Bears sink in the NFC North. Haven’t we traversed this road before?
  20. Carolina Panthers (1-2) – Panthers won ugly after Newton’s big-numbers efforts in Weeks 1 and 2.
  21. Cleveland (2-1) – Played poorly for three periods before beating the Dolphins. Like hitting your into the woods, then into a trap, but making a 40-footer for par.
  22. San Francisco 49ers (2-1) – Kendall Hunter did a good job against the Bengals, but Niners say the job is still Frank Gore’s.
  23. Arizona Cardinals (1-2) – Twice in a row the Cardinals have had the ball and a chance to win in the final two minutes. And failed.
  24. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2) – Jaguars fire their starting quarterback just before the start of the season, put up a total of 29 points in three games – and wonder what’s wrong. The answer probably lies in the early part of the previous sentence.
  25. Seattle Seahawks (1-2) – Fans are on Tavaris Jackson’s back, even after victory over Arizona. Pete Carroll says to give Jackson some space. As usual, fans are ahead of the curve.
  26. Miami Dolphins (0-3) – Buzzards slowly circling over Tony Sparano.
  27. Cincinnati Bengals (1-2) – If it’s any consolation, Chad Ochocino stinks and Terrell Owens isn’t playing.
  28. Denver Broncos (1-2) – John Fox taking heat for passing up field goal late and offense getting stuffed on fourth-and-goal from the one against Titans.
  29. Minnesota Vikings (0-3) – You brought it on yourselves, people of Minnesota. If you hadn’t foisted Tim Pawlenty and Michele Bachmann on us, the Twins might have been decent and the Vikes might be competitive.
  30. Indianapolis Colts (0-3) – You really want to bring Manning back in early December when you’re 2-9 anyway?
  31. St. Louis Rams (0-3) – Next four opponents have a combined 9-3 record.
  32. Kansas City Chiefs (0-3) – Kansas City media is notoriously team-friendly to Chiefs and Royals, but there’s some media talk about being time to take a look at someone other than Cassel.
