Week 17 Power Rankings

Week 17 Power Rankings
This Week Last Week Record Comment
1 Indianapolis 14–1 Imagine spending a whole week’s salary from the John Deere plant on Colts tickets and they don’t try to win
3 Philadelphia 11–4 Win Sunday in Dallas gives Eagles their 6th NFC East title of the decade
4 San Diego 12–3 Best December team over the last few years…ring will move Rivers into Brady-Manning QB territory
2 New Orleans 13–2 Saints might be heading into the playoffs with three straight losses
5 Dallas 10–5 In last two games (both must-have), Romo was 47 for 72 for 597 yards
7 Arizona 10–5 Cards had not won as many as 10 games in a season in 33 years
8 Green Bay 10–5 Best record in the NFL ATS — 10-4-1
10 New England 10–5 Pats games have covered the over only once since Oct. 18
6 Minnesota 11–4 Last two Decembers for Favre — 1-3 with Jets, 1-3 with Vikings
9 Cincinnati 10–5 Bengals and Patriots in same boat — rest regulars or go 100 percent in final game?
15 Pittsburgh 8–7 The switch might have been flipped on too late
12 Denver 8–7 Win over Kansas City in final might not be enough
13 Baltimore 8–7 Is it in the Ravens’ DNA to complain about penalties every time they lose a big game?
20 Houston 8–7 Winning season depends on whether Pats rest Brady in Week 17
17 Atlanta 8–7 Falcons can postfirst back-to-back winning seasons ever, but defense still needs lots of work before they can bhang with the iron
19 New York Jets 8–7 Jets have gone more than a month (11/22) since playing a team that was motivated (Panthers, Bills, Bucs, Falcons, Colts and (Sunday) Bengals
14 Tennessee 7–8 Chris Johnson needs 234 yards vs. Seattle to break NFL single-season rushing record
11 New York Giants 8–7 Remember that loss in Denver when the Giants said afterward it was no big deal? They weren’t saying the same thing after Sunday’s loss
18 Miami 7–8 Dolphins came up flat in most important game of the season
16 Jacksonville 7–8 Next stop: Los Angeles
23 Carolina 7–8 Is Matt Moore the answer at QB? If so, what to do with Jake Delhomme and his fat contract?
22 San Francisco 7–8 Niners have good young talent, but future pretty much will be determiend by how much progress Alex Smith makes
24 Chicago 6–9 Victory over Vikes applied some makeup to cover up lousy season
21 Oakland 5–10 Loss to Browns probably will cost Tom Cable his job
25 Seattle 5–10 Let the rebuilding start in the Great Northwest. This team needs to turn over 50 percent of the roster and start again
26 Buffalo 5–10 Bills start and finish the decade in last place in the AFC East
27 Washington 4–11 Leo Durocher was right about nice guys finishing last. Jim Zorn would be the perfect coach at a D-III college
29 Cleveland 4–11 Strong finish might not save Mangini’s job, but fact he has three years left on contract might
28 Tampa Bay 3–12 Three wins (including one over the Saints) isn’t bad considering the lack of talent and an inexperienced head coach
30 Kansas City 3–12 Lots of stops and starts in the building process — 41 points allowed to the Browns, then 17 the next week to Bengals
31 Detroit 2–13 Injuries to Stafford prevented Lions from figuring out just what they have
32 St. Louis 1–14 Seattle newspapers are trying to drum up a Stephen Jackson-to-Seahawks trade

I’m with you with Philly and San Diego, my two picks to meet in the Super Bowl. A win by the Eagles in Dallas on Sunday would send a cold shiver through the city of New Orleans and Indy may end up too well rested to handle the Philip Rivers show.
