The planets seems to be aligned properly.

Kick-butt defense with playmakers at the key positions? Check.

More momentum than a runaway cement truck? Check.

What is not to like about the Packers as they head to Dallas for the Super Bowl? Football doesn’t come with guarantees (ask the 2007 Patriots), but there is a reason (actually, several) who Green Bay has been installed as a slight favorite over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“What happened a month ago is ancient history,” one Las Vegas oddsmaker is fond of saying. “Look at what teams have done over the last few weeks, and then make your judgment.”

Fair enough. All the Packers have done is bend, fold and mutilate two of the best teams in the NFC (Philadelphia and Chicago), outscoring them by a combined 69-37. That the Packers had to win their final two games of the regular season to just qualify for the playoffs is irrelevant. What matters now is that the Pack have all the ingredients necessary to get the job done.

Start with the defense, because this no one is expecting this one to get into the 50s. It took a while for Dom Capers’s 3-4 to take hold, but two years in and everything is clocking. B.J. RFaji has become a beats at nose tackle, and if he even approximates what New England’s Vince Wilfork did to the Steelers offensive line in the regular season, that will be plenty. Linebacker Clay Matthews (14 sacks) may be the defensive player of the year, and you would be hard pressed to find one game this season in which he has not been a factor. The secondary is more than adequate. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

On the other side of the ball, what is not to like about Aaron Rodgers, who has the chance to once and for all time exorcise any demons that still remain in Wisconsin from the Great Brett Favre Dump of three years ago. Rodgers has the cool and the numbers to shone on the Super Bowl stage, and the only concern is the status of his noggin  after suffering a couple of concussions this season. The Steelers wouldn’t come in high at him, would they? With Pittsburgh ready to stop the run at all costs, receivers Greg Jennings (1,265 yards) and Donald Driver (off season, but still explosive) will take center stage.

Chances are lots of NFL players don’t even know the name of Green Bay’s head coach, a Pittsburgh native who goes about his business in a workmanlike manner and never seems to get flustered. McCarthy toils in the giants shadows of Vince Lombardi and – to an obvious lesser degree – Mike Holgren, but his record stacks up nicely to Holmgren’s and he has a chance to carve his own niche in Packer lore.

So what could possibly go wrong?

Rodgers could land hard on the his head, the Steelers defense could rise up and stop GB’s passing game, the Packers could turn over the ball a few times early and never recover, the Steelers could grind out yet another win-ugly game.

But I don’t think so. This has the look and feel of a Packer win.
