Superbowl 46 Betting Online – 2011 Seahawks Season Preview

The Seattle Seahawks improbable run all the way to the divisional round of the conference playoffs last season was a combination of a strong performance at home, a winning record in the division, and the use of some smoke and mirrors along the way.

One of the primary architects of the Seahawks’ shocking 41-36 victory over the heavily favored Saints is gone as longtime veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck decided to sign with Tennessee as a free agent.

In his place, third-year Head Coach Pete Carroll opted to replace him with Tavaris Jackson, who spent his first five seasons in the league with Minnesota.

Whether or not Carroll sticks with Jackson as the starter as the season progresses or turns things over the Charlie Whitehurst remains to be seen, but the reality is there is no one on the roster that has anything close to the credentials that Hasselbeck brought to the table.

The one thing that the Seahawks do have is a legitimate ground gainer in the backfield. Marshawn Lynch became an overnight sensation for his incredible touchdown run that sealed the win over New Orleans, but he proved he still has what it takes to be a productive back in this league with 573 rushing yards in 11 games with Seattle last season.

With the situation at quarterback a little sketchy right now, look for Lynch to become a much bigger part of this offense.

Seattle did make a splash in free agency by signing WR Sidney Rice away from the Vikings as well as former Raiders TE Zach Miller, so whoever is slinging the ball for this team will have a couple of additional quality targets to throw the ball to. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Carroll used this year’s draft to rebuild its offensive line by selecting James Carpenter in the first round and John Moffitt in the third. These two road graders should be able to plug a few holes on an offense that was ranked 31st in the NFL in rushing yards per game and 19th in passing yards.

The defense was suspect at times last season, finishing the year ranked 27th in yards allowed and 25th in points allowed.

Seattle added NT Alan Branch as a free agent from Arizona and DE Jimmy Wilkerson, from the Saints, to address some of the needs up front, but the defense as a whole, remains the primary area of concern for this team.

Hasselbeck may have not been one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but as mentioned before, he is still better than anyone that Seattle currently has on its roster, making a return trip to the playoffs is highly unlikely this season.
