NFL Betting – Defending champs head to the nation’s capital

Pittsburgh should feel slighted by some NFL betting picks that have selected New England to win the Super Bowl, even though the Steelers are the defending champions. But they seem to be relaxed heading into the preseason, and they’ll head to FedEx Field on Saturday to meet Washington, who have high hopes for the season.

Steelers vs Redskins Odds – Saturday, August 22, 7:30 PM ET

The Steelers forced a pair of turnovers as they won their Super Bowl rematch with Arizona by a score of 20-10, a typical score for a Pittsburgh game. Ben Roethlisberger looked solid in the short time that he played, going 4-of-6 for 33 yards.

Dennis Dixon looked very good in going 10-of-19 for 112 yards, and he’s a much better option as a backup quarterback than Charlie Batch. Pittsburgh’s running backs averaged only 2.8 yards per carry, and their ground game is essential to their sportsbook software chances.

The Redskins were throttled 23-0 in Baltimore, and it’s tough to find any positives. Three pivots combined to go 15-of-29 for 140 yards and a pick; the running backs averaged 2.9 yards per carry; tight end Fred Davis fumbled twice, losing the ball once. Then the defense made an average Baltimore offense look like the 2007 Patriots as the Ravens hung 500 yards on the Redskins. If they want to be considered a solid NFL bet for players, there is no way that they can give up 500 yards again, preseason or not.

The Redskins are a 2.5-point favorite at home, where they lost to Pittsburgh 23-6 last year. Going out on the road doesn’t bother the Steelers as they’re a veteran team with plenty of experience in hostile territory. The Redskins will want to put on a better show in their home debut, because they were embarrassed in Baltimore last week. The defense will especially want to be on their toes, but big-money signing Albert Haynesworth is still bothered by a knee injury and may not see the field. Pride is at stake, and the Redskins need to bounce back after last week’s horrible performance.
