San Francisco 49ers vs. St. Louis Rams Preview

Hard to believe, but the 49ers (5-9) are still alive for a playoff spot and they can even host a first round game, but they must beat the Rams (6-8) in St. Louis to have that chance. NFL betting lines have the Rams as slight 1.5-point betting favorites with a total of 39.5.

The Rams are 2 games under .500, but are in a tie for first place with the Seahawks in the weak, understatement, NFC West and if they can beat the 49ers this Sunday and then Seattle next week in the Great Northwest they will win the division for the first time since 2003 when Kurt Warner was the leader of the Greatest Show on Turf.

In their last games the 49ers were spanked losing to the San Diego Chargers 34-7 and Rams lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 27-13.

This season the Rams have been a solid team to bet on at 9-5 ATS while the 49ers have not been at 5-9 ATS.

49ers’ head coach Mike Singletary has not made the announcement on who will be the starting QB. Alex Smith has started the last 2 games, but did not play well in the last one. Either he or Troy Smith will get the nod, but if Alex does not start it may spell the end of his career in San Francisco. Troy Smith had his best game of the season against the Rams in Week 10 passing for 356 yards with a TD in an OT win and I would bet he is under center this Sunday.

For the 49ers to win they will need TE Vernon Davis and WR Josh Morgan to help the QB out and get open and the Offensive line will need to protect the QB, as last week Alex Smith was sacked 6 times. The last thing will not be easy since the Rams rank 6th in the league with 39 sacks. Football betting

In Week 10 the 49ers beat the Rams 23-20 and in that game the 49ers racked up 421 yards. In that game the leading rusher for San Francisco was Frank Gore, who is out for the season with a hip injury. Brian Westbrook had a huge game in his first start taking over for Gore, but since that time he has really struggled averaging 25 rushing yards per game and in his last 2 games he has failed to average over 3 yards per carry. He and fellow RB Anthony Dixon will have to play well against the Rams and their 16th ranked rushing defense and if they do not whatever Smith starts at QB will have to carry the offense.

Sam Bradford has played well as a rookie for the Rams this season, but he has not played well as of late. In the loss to the Chiefs last week he only passed for 181 yards and it was the 2nd game in a row he threw 0 TD and 2 INT. He has thrown at least 2 picks in 4 games this season and the Rams lost all of those games. He will be facing a 49ers’ passing D that only ranks 25th in the league and gave up 266 passing yards last week.

Rams’ RB Steven Jackson rushed for 148 yards with a TD in Week 10 against the 49ers and he will be facing a San Francisco rushing D that is legit ranking 7th in the league. He can take a lot of pressure of Bradford if he can have a good game.

The 49ers QB situation is a mess and their rushing offense has really been struggling. Even though Bradford has 4 picks and 0 TD in his last 2 games he will be facing a suspect San Francisco secondary that only has 13 picks on the season. Add to the fact this game is in the Rams’ house where St. Louis is 4-3 this season. The Rams will play well this Sunday, win this game, cover the spread, and inch close to a playoff berth.

Betting Trends

San Francisco is 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games in St. Louis and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games. However, the 49ers have only covered the spread 2 times in their last 7 games and the Rams are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games facing a team with a winning record.

Pick: Rams -1.5
