Both would have been impressive feats but instead we have two very disappointed teams trying to turn around a culture of losing – it will be interesting to see who rises off the mat on Sunday because one of them gains new life with a win.

As always the key for Carolina is Panthers QB Cam Newton. When he plays at his best there is no team in the league they are not good enough to beat. In Buffalo, even though they lost last week there is genuine optimism thanks to the composure of rookie Manuel and what could be a pretty good defense.

This is not an important marquee game don’t completely forget about it. Especially with a home underdog.

Carolina

The Carolina Panthers would have been one of the kings of the opening week had they been able to hold on in their opener against Seattle. The problem was that their offense was pretty stagnant wasting a very solid effort by their defense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Seattle is all about establishing the ground game but LB Luke Kuechly and Co. held them to less than 3 yards a carry which bodes well for them this week because Buffalo will certainly want to run it at them too, especially until their rookie QB gets more comfortable.

The key as always is getting QB Cam Newton and the passing game on track or at the very least moderately productive. Without it they are not enough of a threat to most defenses in the league.

Buffalo

Buffalo had the lead entering the 4th quarter but couldn’t hold on last week against New England. Despite taking the loss at home there were a lot of positives from the game including a solid debut by QB E.J. Manuel who didn’t throw for a lot of yards but looked very poised with a couple of TD passes and no interceptions.

Memo to WR Stevie Johnson: if you want to be considered elite you have to catch the ball when it is thrown to you.

One other area of concern from last week was the success the Patriots had running the ball because that is what Carolina is going to focus on as well. Buffalo is starting the season with two games at home and they need to at least split them or else it will be another lost season pretty quickly. Hope disappears pretty quickly up there.

Take the Bills for the upset win on Sunday. I am not sure why they are not actually the favourite in this one.
