This week they can demonstrate some amount of team growth if they can bounce back and beat a bad Oakland team. A win will open playoff speculation depending on how some other games play out but really this is a bad team going through a talent evaluation phase to close the season.

Oakland

The Raiders played the Dallas Cowboys tough last week before ultimately giving way in the second half. It was a pretty good performance given the overall talent on this team and the fact that they were starting an undrafted rookie QB in Matt McGloin.

When you look at the Raiders it makes you wonder how team’s get to be so bad. They seem to be playing hard but the choices that have been made in terms of putting together the roster don’t seen to make much sense.

This week QB Terrelle Pryor is off the injury list but there is no official word I have seen about whether he will start. When he is on the field he pumps up their running game for sure but as a thrower he is really not much better than McGloin, which is kind of an insult and a complement to the duo.

Playing the Jets though anything can happen as they have their own struggles in the pivot and the Oakland defense is not terrible.

New York

It is quite clear that the Jets fortunes are tied closely to their rookie quarterback Geno Smith. As a result the going has not been very good lately as the Jets have lost their last three games and 4 of 5. Smith has not thrown a touchdown pass since week 7 against New England and has a dreadful 19 interceptions. Now he wouldn’t be the first QB to struggle in his first go around but it has to be concerning that he seems to be playing worse not better as the season has progressed.

If the Jets could even get average offensive production they might be right in the thick of the playoff race in the AFC. However, this is the second worst scoring team in the NFL which is just too much for a defense, which is first against the run, to overcome.

Normally teams would just play around that strengths but the Raiders are not capable of doing so. Whoever can control the line of scrimmage when Oakland has the ball (Jets D vs. Oakland O) will determine who wins.

Spread Pick: New York Jets -2.5
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: New York 17 – Oakland 7
