How Can Chicago Win?

The Bears have been excellent on both sides of the ball, so really, they don’t have to change much. Quarterback Jay Cutler has spearheaded the offensive turnaround that many Bears fans thought they would see last season and the defense has maintained its usual high level of play.

Last year, the Bears gave away the ball 34 times, which was the third-highest total in the NFL. This year, their +3 turnover ratio is the third-best ratio.

Offensive coordinator Mike Martz has being a crucial part of the turnaround as well. While Cutler receives much of the credit, the receiving corps has been surprisingly competent early on this season. Johnny Knox is in the top 20 in receiving yards (No. 17) with a very impressive 21.1 yards per reception.

We’ve already seen the Giants defense exploited by both the run and pass in the past two weeks, so the Bears can kick how they want to poison the Giants.

There is no question that the Bears need to get running back Matt Forte going. He has just 108 rushing yards through three games this season and the Bears won’t be very successful on the road if that continues.

How Can New York Win?

Stop making careless mistakes. Giants quarterback Eli Manning probably felt some pain watching film this week and seeing his left-handed end zone interception on replay.

The Giants completely outplayed the Tennessee Titans last week and had it not been for a number of careless turnovers in the red zone, they’d be 2-1.

The Bears are coming off of an emotional win themselves and if there was one thing clear in their near-loss on Monday Night Football, it’s that they have plenty of problems pressuring opposing quarterbacks and stopping the pass.

The Bears have just two sacks this season, which is allowing opposing quarterbacks all day to throw. Their pass defense is ranked 28th in the NFL, which is something that the Giants coaching staff will highlight all week in preparation.

The Bears might be 3-0 but they could just as easily be 0-3. They got lucky against the Detroit Lions in Week 1, they scraped one out in Dallas in Week 2 and they won a coin flip against the Packers in Week 3. The Giants just need to play smart and they’ll hand the Bears their first loss of 2010.

Outlook

This is just a really bad spot for the Bears. They are on the road on a short week of preparation after an emotionally draining win on Monday Night Football. Now they head out on the road to New York where they face the Giants, who put up a clunker at home last week.

This is a must-win for the Giants and after playing sloppy last week, they’ll clean up the mistakes and come up with a better effort this week.
