The Number 2 seed in the NFC will also be on the line – home field for either of these teams for one game in the playoff is a huge incentive. New Orleans has been installed as a three point favorite – they have covered the spread in every home game that Sean Payton has coached since 2010.

The Carolina Panthers have been terrific – eight straight wins have them looking like a serious contender in the NFL. Although Cam Newton`s recent play has stolen much of the headlines for the Panthers, their defense has also been sensational and a serious challenge to any team that they play.

Cam Newton has been terrific and will offer the Saints defense a similar challenge to the one they had last week when Russell Wilson torched them to the tune of 34 points.

Newton has passed for 2,616 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for another 447 yards and six scores. He is a dual threat guy and perhaps has entered into the league MVP running. Steve Smith has caught 54 passes for 632 yards and three touchdowns while tight end Greg Olsen is close behind with 50 catches for 611 yards and five touchdowns. No receiver has elevated to elite NFL status but they have become reliable and a terrific compliment to Carolina’s run game.

DeAngelo Williams leads the ninth-best rushing offense with 610 yards and two touchdowns. He, Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert and Cam Newton are all threats to run the ball – each has a unique set of skills and each is dangerous in their own ways.

Carolina’s defense has been incredible all season long – ranking first in points allowed, second in total yards allowed, sixth in passing yards allowed and second in rushing yards allowed per game. The Panthers have been beyond stout on defense and will offer a similar challenge to the Saints as they had last week against Seattle’s incredible D.

The New Orleans Saints will be eager to get back home after tasting a little of their own medicine in Seattle. Home is really where the Saints excel – teams coming into the Superdome have had an extremely difficult time against the crowd noise and the Saints defense this year.

The New Orleans offense is as advertised – Drew Brees has been incredible passing for 3,794 yards and 29 touchdowns for the third-best passing offense in the league. Jimmy Graham has caught 68 passes for 988 yards and 12 touchdowns – incredible numbers for one of the biggest single difference makers in the game right now. Marques Colston, Kenny Stills, Robert Meachem and Darren Sproles exist as well in the passing game – all are dangerous and all are effective if given a chance.

The New Orleans run game has shown signs of life as well lately – Pierre Thomas has 486 yards and one touchdown for the league`s 23rd ranked rushing offense.

The New Orleans defense has seen a major turnaround under Rob Ryan – they are no slouches anymore. The Saints are sixth in points allowed, eighth in total yards allowed and fourth in passing yards allowed per contest – amazing considering where this unit was at this time last year. This unit, like the offense should be fired up to avenge an ugly outing Monday night. New Orleans has a ton to prove against Carolina – should be interesting.

Sunday Night Football Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:
• CAR are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
• Over is 10-3 in CAR last 13 vs. NFC South.
• CAR are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games.
• Under is 7-1 in NO last 8 vs. NFC.
• NO are 21-6 ATS in their last 27 home games.
• NO are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games in December.
• CAR are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
• Road team is 19-7 ATS in their last 26 meetings.

Carolina has been superb the last eight weeks of the season – 8-0 SU and 7-1 ATS. But a trip to the Superdome is a totally different type of challenge. Just like the Seahawks are invincible at CenturyLink, the Saints are untouchable at home. Drew Brees simply doesn`t have two bad games in a row – I expect a serious bounce back on both sides of the ball this week.

Pick: New Orleans Saints -3 1/2
