The Washington Redskins will be looking to complete the season sweep over their NFC East rival the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday afternoon at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast regionally on FOX.
Washington’s tumultuous season hit a new low-point last Sunday, when a botched extra-point attempt on a last-second touchdown resulted in a one-point 17-16 loss to Tampa Bay that effectively ended any postseason plans the Redskins may still have had. The game ended in a ‘push’ with the ‘Skins closing as a one-point home underdog.
The loss dropped Washington to 5-8 straight-up on the year and 5-6-2 against the spread. It is currently in third place in the NFC East and riding out the string for the final three weeks of the season. The Redskins started out this year with high expectations, but a porous defense that was further hampered by the whole Albert Haynesworth dilemma along with an inconsistent offense proved to be their downfall.
Washington’s defense is currently ranked dead-last overall; 29th against the pass and 28th against the run. It is giving up an average of 23.8 points per game, ranking it 23rd in the league. The arrival of Donovan McNabb from Philadelphia gave new hope for the Redskins’ offense, but after 13 games they are ranked 28th in the league in scoring; averaging just 18.3 points per game.
The Dallas story this season has been one of deep despair, but possible redemption depending on the outcome of its last three games. Interim head coach Jason Garrett has been able to coax three wins in the last five games out of a team that stumbled its way to a 1-7 start. Injuries along the way to quarterback Tony Romo and more recently WR/KR Dez Bryant have not helped the Cowboys cause, but the general feeling is this team still has enough talent to lineup and win every week.
Dallas comes into this game with a 4-9 overall record SU and are 6-7 ATS. It is coming off a 30-27 loss to the Eagles as a 3 ½-point home favorite which followed up a 38-35 overtime win over Indianapolis as a 5 ½-point road underdog. The Cowboys are currently ranked seventh in the league in overall offense behind backup QB John Kitna, who has filled in for Romo over the past seven weeks. Defensively, Dallas is ranked 31st in the league in points allowed and 25th overall.
Trends:
Washington is 3-2 ATS in its last five road games but just 1-4-1 ATS in its last six games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in its last four games.
Dallas is 3-0 ATS in its last three games at home and 5-0 ATS in its last five games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in its last 10 games.
Head-to-head, the Cowboys have won three out of the last four games SU, but the Redskins are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 and beat Dallas 13-7 in Week 1 as a 3 ½-point home favorite. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of the last six meetings.
Both these teams are left playing for pride, but there is more on the line for the Cowboys, who are still auditioning for their jobs in the eyes of owner Jerry Jones. Normally the Redskins would find a way to keep a game like this close, but after last week’s disaster against the Buccaneers this team is in for a major letdown this week.
