Let’s take a look at the numbers:

The Raiders cleaned house in the offseason – Darrius Heyward-Bey, safety Michael Huff, linebacker Philip Wheeler, defensive lineman Desmond Bryant, defensive lineman Dave Tollefson, tight end Brandon Myers, punter Shane Lechler, defensive tackle Richard Seymour, cornerback Shawntae Spencer and linebacker Rolando McClain are all out leaving a host of new talent to attempt to compete for roster spots during camp. Perhaps their most recognizable player Carson Palmer is also out of the Oakland fold.

Carson Palmer at least gave the Raiders credibility at the quarterback position. In is Matt Flynn who has been able to win the starting job in any of his NFL stops, Terrelle Pryor who didn’t give Oakland much in the way of optimism during his abbreviated playing time last year and rookie Tyler Wilson who likely won’t see the field barring some unforeseen circumstance. That leaves the oft injured Darren McFadden to shoulder the load offensively and only if he can stay healthy. A new Offensive Coordinator should help – Greg Knapp’s zone blocking scheme last year was a total disaster. McFadden will have a ton to prove this year and he could be worth a couple of wins all by himself – again – only if he can stay out of the infirmary!

The Raiders defense was a mess last year and did very little to rectify the situation in the offseason. Charles Woodson was brought in to add to an aging and/or inexperienced defensive unit. There are no stars on the defense – no real difference makers for this team going forward.

Raiders Betting Outlook:

The Raiders ugliness on paper will translate seamlessly to the product on the field. They are simply void of talent everywhere except for the running back position and who knows if Darren McFadden will play 16 games. Expect the Raiders to challenge for the worst record in the NFL this year. There are some seemingly gimme games along the way but even the weakest will give Oakland fits. Most teams enter their campaigns with a little optimism even though it may not be justified. For the Raiders, there doesn’t even seem to be a sense of pre-season optimism.

The only thing I see the Oakland Raiders winning this year is the number 1 pick in next year’s entry draft. Sorry Raiders fans – no really – sorry! Three or four wins is all you can expect.
