Two of the more disappointing teams in the NFL meet at Arrowhead on Sunday afternoon with the aim of staying out of last place in the very weak AFC West. The Oakland Raiders, fresh off an unimpressive win against Jacksonville take on the Kansas City Chiefs, winners of just one game this year.

So who wins this clash of the underachievers? Let’s break it down.

The Oakland Raiders have bumbled their way through the first quarter of the season – not even the bye seemed to spark this team. Penalties (as per usual), a poor rushing attack and poor execution all around have plague this team so far. They did beat the Steelers earlier this season so we know that the Raiders are capable of putting together a decent game plan.

Currently the Raiders are 24th in scoring in the NFL – 18.83 points per game. The running game has really struggled- those Darren McFadden owners in Fantasy Football know what I am talking about. The Raiders must be leading the league in 1 yard runs! Together the Raiders running game is 31st in the NFL – averaging just 76 yards per game. Brutal!

Carson Palmer has looked OK and the stable of pass catchers have been adequate so far. Oakland own the 9th ranked passing game in the NFL with an average of over 273 yards per game.

It’s not only the offense that has struggled in Oakland. The defense is 13th against the run, 22nd against the pass and they allow 28.50 points per game – good (or bad) for 27th in the NFL. They gave up 23 points last week to a Jacksonville team that was without Maurice Jones-Drew and Blaine Gabbert!

The Kansas City Chiefs have been equally disappointing on both sides of the ball – so disappointing that backup Brady Quinn has been named starter over Matt Cassel at quarterback! It’s a good thing for Jamaal Charles – he has been the offense this year and gets a crack at an Oakland run defense that has been below average all season long. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Chiefs are the 23rd ranked pass offense and getting more dysfunctional by the week. How long will Dwayne Bowe remain in uniform for the Chiefs with the trade deadline looming? Brady Quinn certainly isn’t the answer – even the Cleveland Browns recognized that.

KCs 3rd ranked running game will get a boost this week as if they needed one. Peyton Hillis is expected to return from an ankle injury to bolster what is already an impressive unit. Jamaal Charles has been terrific and could win this game all by himself.

The Chiefs were supposed to be a formidable defensive team with Head Coach Romeo Crennel at the helm – Wrong! They have been OK versus the pass – 13th but they have been suspect against the run – 22nd and allowing 125 yards per game. The Chiefs give up 30.50 points per game – 30th in the NFL.

Betting Prediction:

  •  Oakland is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games when playing on the road against Kansas City
  •  The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Oakland’s last 8 games when playing Kansas City
  •  The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Oakland’s last 7 games when playing on the road against Kansas City
  •  The total has gone OVER in 9 of Oakland’s last 13 games
  •  The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Kansas City’s last 8 games when playing Oakland
  •  The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Kansas City’s last 7 games when playing at home against Oakland
  •  The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Kansas City’s last 10 games at home
  •  The total has gone UNDER in 12 of Kansas City’s last 17 games

Arrowhead apparently doesn’t scare the Raiders! They are 5-0 in their last five trips there. I think the trend continues on Sunday. With Brady Quinn in at QB the Raiders will be able to stack the line to slow Jamaal Charles just enough. There is a reason that the Chiefs have not held the lead in any of their games so far this year (their one win came in overtime). The misery continues for the Chiefs and the hope for a division crown remains in the distance for the Raiders.

Pick: Oakland Raiders +1
