NFL Betting Picks – San Diego Chargers @ Kansas City Chiefs

The Tennessee Titans hope to squash any optimism that the Oakland Raiders have going into the 2010 NFL season and NFL Betting lines reflect the notion that Tennessee will do just that. A repeat of Tennessee’s 0-6 start in 2009 appears unlikely especially since Oakland is on tap for Week 1.

Tennessee Looks for Better Season Start Against Oakland

The NFL is a league of parity with teams rising and falling in the standings every year but the one division that has stayed the same over time is the AFC West, where the San Diego Chargers have dominated.

The Chargers have totaled (roughly speaking) double-digit wins per year in the Norv Turner era, and they haven’t been challenged for division supremacy in a long time.  Will anything change this season? The Chargers are still a far superior team to the Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, and the team they open their schedule against as well, the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs feel as though they are a better team than their 2009-10 record indicated, but they will have to prove that starter on Monday night.

How Can San Diego Win?

The Chargers enter the season looking to finally get over that postseason hump and into the big game. With one of the most talented offenses in the game over the past couple of seasons, San Diego has repeatedly choked on the biggest playoff stages and failed to capitalize on the opportunity to accomplish greatness.

Quarterback Philip Rivers ranks among the best starters in the league and will need to make the most of his receiving options in Legadu Naanee and Malcolm Floyd since Vincent Jackson is suspended/holding out. Rookie running back Ryan Matthews has big shoes to fill and grew up idolizing LaDanian Tomlinson, so the Chargers are hoping that he provides the offense with more balance than Tomlinson did in his twilight years. The Chargers’ defense fell off big time last year and will have to make the necessary corrections.

That could be tough in Week One where Shawne Merriman will be out.

How Can Kansas City Win?

Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel was heavily criticized in the offseason for not living up to the hype after he arrived from New England, but the truth is the offensive playmakers he had around him were a shadow of the Pro Bowl performers he had with the Patriots.

The Chiefs will base their attack on the running back duo of Jamal Charles and Thomas Jones in 2010 and that should open up the skies.

On defense, Kansas City runs a 3-4 defense, and will need to find a way to get pressure on Rivers in order to prevent him from picking them apart. The Chiefs are thin up the middle on defense, and will have to prove they can slow the run as well.

Outlook

Not much has changed in the AFC West, where the Chargers are still the dominant team. San Diego has a history of starting slow, but playing at Arrowhead Stadium is not as difficult as it used to be.

The Chiefs were just 1-7 at home last year and that should help the Chargers get off on the right foot on opening day with a solid win and cover here.

Pick: Chargers -4.5
