NFL Odds – Houston Looks to Put Indy in an Early AFC South Hole

The Houston Texans are many NFL oddsmakers’ sexy pick to get over the hump and finally make a post season appearance this season. They may not beat out the Colts for the division crown but they could certainly make some noise with a Week 1 win over their biggest rivals.

It is very difficult to gage the Indianapolis Colts based on their typical preseason woes. NFL odds are that they will once again prevail in the AFC South but that they will have to deal with a pesky Houston Texans team all season long.

The Colts will return largely the same team that came up just short of an NFL title last season and they are a team that knows that their window for success is closing with every passing season.

Peyton Manning has made a few uncharacteristic mistakes in the preseason but if there is one thing that we all know about him is that when the games count, he will be at his best. Manning is 4-1 in his last 5 Week 1 games.

The running game may still be an issue with Joseph Addai’s concussion in the preseason but if you are the Colts, who needs the running game.

Bob Sanders and a stout defensive line will be looking forward to challenging one of the NFL’s elite offenses. We should know pretty quickly if the Colts are a threat to go 16-0 pretty early on in the season.

The Houston Texans have looked pretty good in the preseason. They manhandled the Cowboys in Week 3 of the preseason and looked good in their other contests. The Texans know that a Week 1 win against Indianapolis could set them up and give them the necessary confidence for a breakout 2010 season.

Health is a huge issue for the Texans. They already lost prospect running back Ben Tate so they can hardly afford another injury on offense.

Fragile Matt Schuab leads one of the most potent offenses this year and the emergence of Arian Foster has given the Texans good reason to be optimistic.

The Texans defense is also very good and should be a good test for the Indianapolis Colts.

NFL Odds – Handicapping Analysis:

There is definitely a blueprint for beating the Indianapolis Colts – keep their offense off of the field. The Houston offense has the ability to sustain long drives and the defense has the ability to make some plays as well.

I think that the Texans will be the more motivated bunch in this game.

Although they are 1-2 Straight Up in the last three versus Indy, they have managed to cover in five of their last eight meetings. I like Houston to get it done at home in Week 1!
