The Houston Texans, fresh off a disappointing home loss will travel west to take on the equally disappointing Oakland Raiders in Week 4. The Texans offense, despite an underwhelming performance last week still sits in the Top 10 of most statistical categories while the defense has been poor thus far.

The Houston Texans couldn’t get anything going last week on offense against a desperate Dallas defense but this week, they have the luxury of facing a defense that has given up its share of yards and points in the first three weeks of the season. Matt Schaub has five touchdowns and four interceptions so far and has been plagued by a leaky offensive line (11 sacks given up in the last two games). He still has one of the most dangerous receiving corps. at his disposal, although Andre Johnson is banged up at present.

It will likely be the NFL’s leading rusher, Arian Foster that is featured against Oakland’s terrible run defense. Foster has amassed 406 yards on the ground thus far and was the first running back in two years to go for more that 100 yards against a Dallas defense.

The Texans defense needs work in order to ascend to elite status. The run defense currently ranks second in the NFL allowing 54.3 yards per game while the pass defense has given up a staggering 368 yards per game, the worst in the league.

The Oakland Raiders appear to be finding new ways to lose. In the first two games it was the ineptitude of Jason Campbell and in Week 3 it was three missed field goals and failure to convert Red Zone opportunities. There is no time for the Raiders to wallow however; a motivated Texans team is on tap.

The Oakland offense looks better with Bruce Gradkowski under center. He passed for 255 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Arizona while the running game anchored by Darren McFadden maintained its strong early season play.

The Raiders defense is typically bad. Although Nnamdi Asomugha held Larry Fitzgerald to one catch for 20 yards last week, they still allowed the Cardinals to run all over them. Now they face the NFL’s leading rusher.

Texans/Raiders Prediction:

Houston is 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games overall, are 5-3 ATS on the road in their last eight games and are 5-1 S/U and ATS in their last six meetings with Oakland. However, the Texans are just 3-6-1 ATS when favored.

Oakland is 7-18 S/U and 8-17 ATS in their last 25 games at home but are 8-7 ATS in their last 15 games when they are the underdog.

The Oakland Raiders have done a decent job stopping the pass which bodes well for them in their Sunday matchup. However, they have been miserable against the run – which is not a good sign against the uber-hot Arian Foster. On the flip side, Oakland’s passing offense has been poor and likely won’t be able to take advantage of the NFL’s worst pass defense. Oakland’s  strength is running the ball and Houston has done a masterful job at stopping opponents’ running backs. It is a matchup nightmare for the Raiders on both sides of the ball.

Pick: Houston Texans -3. The Spread may grow as game time draws near, so take them now!
