Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs

Sunday, September 11, 1:00 p.m. ET
Week 1 NFL gambling favorite: Chiefs -6.5

This pick isn’t nearly as easy as it looks, as a 6.5-point spread during Week 1 is always a bit suspect. You never know what bottom feeder will suddenly become a contender. It happens every year. Look at Kansas City and Tampa last season.

Week 1 NFL Gambling Odds

Still, I think the Chiefs can pull off the Week-1 rout. Arrowhead Stadium is a very difficult place to play and the fans should be extra enthusiastic with high expectations for 2011. Jamaal Charles seems primed for an MVP-caliber season and he might go off against a Bills defense that was by far the NFL’s worst against the run last season. Marcell Dareus will help but probably not right away.

Pick: Chiefs -6.5

Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans

Sunday, September 11, 1:00 p.m. ET
Week 1 NFL gambling favorite: Colts -1

I think the Colts’ great demise begins in Week 1 at Houston. In the Texans’ favor: (a) Peyton Manning is returning from an offseason neck surgery that reportedly isn’t healing well; (b) they stomped on Indy to open last season on the strength of Arian Foster’s legs. That free-agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is reportedly considering Houston as a place to sign is just gravy. This may be Houston’s year to finally take the AFC South, not necessarily because it will improve, but because Indianapolis will regress.

Pick: Texans +1

Philadelphia Eagles @ St. Louis Rams

Sunday, September 11, 1:00 p.m. ET
Week 1 NFL gambling favorite: Eagles -4.5

The St. Louis Rams should be an improved team this season. I’m especially excited to see what new offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels can do with blue-chip quarterback Sam Bradford, the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

However, the Philadelphia Eagles under Michael Vick’s guidance for a full season look like a scary bunch. Even scarier in Week 1 on turf. And even scarier against a St. Louis “D” that is still a work in progress. I wouldn’t be surprised to see fireworks at both ends of the field in this one. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Vick seems to relish disappointing opposing teams’ fans. On the road last season, he had 16 touchdown passes versus four interceptions and averaged 7.2 yards per carry in six games.

Pick: Eagles -4.5

Cincinnati Bengals @ Cleveland Browns

Sunday, September 11, 1:00 p.m. ET
Week 1 NFL gambling favorite: Browns -3

It’s strange to see the Cleveland Browns favored to win a football game, but the oddsmakers are correct here. The Bengals’ quarterbacking situation alone is enough to make them underdogs. Who will throw the ball on September 11? Rookie Andy Dalton? Career backup quarterback Jordan Palmer, brother of the departing Carson?

The Cleveland Browns still have a long way to go before they contend but they’ve gradually added talent on both sides of the ball. This year, they beefed up their defensive line with Phil Taylor and Jabaal Sheard. Last season, they added Joe Haden to the secondary and Colt McCoy at quarterback. Assuming Peyton Hillis doesn’t succumb to the Madden Curse in Week 1, he should do some damage against a Bengals “D” that was average at best versus the run last season.

Pick: Browns -3
