Pittsburgh Steelers 2012-2013 NFL Futures Lines & Predictions

After getting to the Super Bowl in 2011, the Steelers 2012 playoffs ended with a disappointing first round loss to the Denver Broncos. Pittsburgh’s defense wasn’t quite as dominant last season, but injuries were at least partially to blame.

The offensive line continues to shorten Ben Roethlisberger’s career. One has to wonder how many more years this roster has before major changes occur.

Pittsburgh is used to winning, and anything less than a Super Bowl run is considered a disappointment here.

Like their division rivals (Baltimore), Pittsburgh isn’t getting any younger. Some of their key defensive stars are now past their prime, but this team should still have a couple more highly competitive years in them. If they can stay healthy, they might have another title run in their future.

Offense:

Ben Roethlisberger has taken 314 sacks in his 8-year-career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Big Ben does hold onto the ball quite a while, but a great deal of blame has to be placed on the offensive line. The offensive front has been a major problem for this team for several years now. The Steelers selected offensive linemen with their top two draft picks in this year’s NFL Draft.

David DeCastro could be a star in the league, so he should help out some right away.

Rashard Mendenhall will likely miss the entire season with an injury. Chris Rainey and Johnathan Dwyer will battle it out for the starting running back spot. Mike Wallace is holding out in hopes of receiving Larry Fitzgerald type money. The Steelers clearly need him back in the fold as soon as possible, because he stretches the defense in a big way.

Antonio Brown had a breakout season for the Steelers in 2011, and I expect another big year from him. Heath Miller will also get more action in the passing game now that Hines Ward has retired. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Defense:

There’s little doubt that this is the strength of the Steelers football team. If Pittsburgh is going to get back to the Super Bowl, it will be their defense that leads the way. Troy Polamalu is still one of the best players in the NFL, but he has to stay healthy. There isn’t a better safety in the league, and every quarterback has to keep a close eye on him at all times. Ike Taylor was picked on in Denver, and he and Ryan Clark are both getting past their prime at the corners.

The defensive line suffered quite a few injuries last year. Casey Hampton and Brett Keisel should be back and ready to go this season. Ziggy Hood was a major disappointment last season, and he must improve if this defense is going to lead the way.

The Steelers cut James Farrior, but James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley are back as leaders of the linebacker unit.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2012-2013 NFL Predictions: 11-5

Look for Pittsburgh to start off the season strong as they have a very easy schedule at the beginning of this year’s campaign.

Later in the season Pittsburgh faces a grueling seven-week stretch which includes the Ravens twice and the Giants and Cowboys on the road. There’s a lot of pride in Pittsburgh, and I think this team comes out ready to play this year.

Still, it will be injuries that determine whether or not they have a Super Bowl caliber team.
