With so much preseason talk about the AFC North, who would have thought the biggest game of Week 9 would be the Raiders and the Chiefs battling it out for who would gain control of the AFC West. Even better, that San Diego and Denver Better would be in the AFC basement.

However, that’s where we’re at as Oakland could gain control of the West with a win in Sunday’s home match up against the Chiefs. It would the first time they have led the division in nearly a decade, and the first time since 2002 to post three straight victories.

Kansas City leads the all-time series, winning 12 of the last 18 including last year’s narrow 16-10 victory after losing the first of the series 13-10 at home.

The Chiefs however, has to improve away from Arrowhead Stadium this year. They are 1-2 away from Arrowhead and are averaging nearly nine points fewer on the road while giving up 9.5 more per game They are opening a key two-game AFC West road stretch that takes them to Denver next week, so to win in Oakland will be critical in maintaining their lead atop the division.

Kansas City is coming off a thrilling overtime win against Buffalo, 13-10. The game was scoreless until the Chiefs broke the deadlock in the second quarter on Matt Cassel’s swing pass to Dwayne Bowe that sent him scrambling into the end zone with 1:28 remaining in the first half.

The Bills stayed in it with a field goal in the third, and both teams scored touchdowns in the fourth sending the game into extra time as Ryan Succop’s 35-yard field goal won it for KC in the overtime period.

Cassel again didn’t appear sharp, managing just 14 completions out of 26 attempts for 152 yards.

As always, the KC No. 1 rushing attack led the way as RB Jamaal Charles finished the day with 177 yards on 22 carries while receiving another 61.

In stark contrast to its running game, the Chiefs rank dead last in passing yards with 164.4 a game. Cassel has completed 105 of 179 for 1,196 yards while registering just 10 touchdowns. Bowe leads the receiving corps in scoring with six touchdowns on 21 receptions.

Meanwhile, the defense is good at preventing the rush, ranking 7th at under 97 a game, but has trouble on the pass as it ranks 23rd with over 236 a game. That could be a problem for a Raiders team that relies heavily on its rushing assault.

As for Oakland, they pulled off another upset last Sunday, thrashing Seattle 33-3 to pull to .500 on the season. The team has now combined for 92 points in its last two games while surrendering only 17.

Credit a tough Oakland defense that shut down the Seahawks offense, keeping them off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, while amassing a 23-0 lead.

Seattle’s only score was a 49-yard field goal by Olindo Mare with 8:57 on the clock. After that, it was again all Oakland as they rolled up ten more points to ice the game.

The Raiders offense has sprung to life after scoring 76 points and playing to a 1-3 record in its first four games. Now it has scored 136 points in the second four games and has a 3-1 record.

The Oakland ground game continues to drive the team, ranking second in the league with nearly 170 YPG, led by McFadden who has 668 of those with four touchdowns.

Despite some early season setbacks, that included being benched by the coaching staff, QB Jason Campbell remains the Raiders starter with 78 completions for 1,023 yards.

Over the last two contests, the defense has shown improvement, but still ranks 26th in opponents rushing (127.4 a game). An obvious problem now facing the best running attack in the NFL.

Since Cassel doesn’t seem to be a huge threat through the air, the Raiders’ secondary shouldn’t have a problem with coverage. However, if they cannot find a way to slow down and contain the two-headed ground assault that the KC offense brings, it could be a long day.

Could this be the end of the road for the Raiders? I’m going out on a limb and saying no. I think Oakland has what it takes to grab this one at home.
