The Seattle Seahawks emerge out of their bye this week for a road date against a team completely humiliated in Week 4 – the Washington Redskins. While the Hawks were last seen posting a win in a Super Bowl rematch against Denver, the Skins were busy letting the New York Giants roll all over them last Thursday night.

Seattle has to be licking its chops on both sides of the ball – the Skins defense has been brutal and Washington’s offense under Kirk Cousins was absolutely shut down by an average Giants defense last week.

Seahawks

Despite a loss to the San Diego Chargers in Week 2, the Seattle Seahawks have to be happy about where they stand heading into Week 5 – their win in Week 3 against the seemingly unstoppable force Denver only served to strengthen the confidence level of this team.

Surprisingly it was Seattle’s offense that was the ultimate difference in Week 3 – this unit marched 80 yards in overtime against a good Denver defense and scored the game winning TD. Russell Wilson was masterful on that drive and looks to be one step away from that elite class of NFL QBs. He has six TDs on the year versus one interception, he is completing 70% of his passes and he has been terrific thus far at using his legs to get much needed first downs. Any doubts about Wilson should be a thing in the distant past – this dude is a stud!

Seattle’s offensive line has been a bit of an issue so far this year – pass protecting has been a problem – something that the bye week likely rectified. Watch for the big guys up front to improve at keeping opposing players out of their backfield and to open up a few holes for…

Beast Mode! He has been fine this year – three TDs through three games while averaging 4.5 yards per carry. When Lynch is getting the ball 20 times per game it is because the Hawks are dictating the play – look for Seattle to establish the run early and often Monday night.

Defensively the Seahawks have yet to have their best game – maybe out of the bye they will come up with something special. That said they have faced Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning so far! Seattle is middle-of-the-pack in terms of pass defense thus far but will improve, and the run defense is allowing just 72.3 yards per game – good for fourth in the NFL.

Redskins

It’s pretty difficult to know what to make of the Washington Redskins. From a good offensive performance in Week 3 to a miserable one in Week 4, the Skins have a ton of question marks as we head into Week 5. This biggest of which is – WHO IS KIRK COUSINS? And is he a legit starter in this league? Cousins went from 400+ yards passing in one game to four interceptions the next – you have to think the Seahawks are fired up at the opportunity to face this guy!

If things weren’t bad enough for Washington’s offense, Cousins’ favorite target Niles Paul is highly questionable with a concussion. The tight end position has gashed the Seahawks defense this season – Paul’s injury could loom large this week. At least there is Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson. Both were virtually invisible last week and will likely be a focal point this week against a surprisingly average-looking Seahawks secondary.

Now for the defense – ugh! This unit was bad before the season-ending injury to DeAngelo Hall. They surrendered 300 passing yards and four TDs to Eli Manning for crying out loud – one week after giving up 325 yards and three TDs to Nick Foles who was awful last week. The Skins did register a whopping 10 sacks in Week 2 against Jacksonville but have fallen back to earth and have posted just one more in the next two games combined.

NFL Week 5 Betting Trends

• Under is 7-1 in SEA last 8 vs. NFC.
• SEA are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 Mon. games.
• SEA are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 vs. NFC.
• WAS are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 Mon. games.
• WAS are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 vs. NFC.
• WAS are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games in October.

The Washington defense is not going to slow down the Seattle offense in this one. On the flip side, Seattle’s defense will be motivated to silence the legion of critics that say their stop unit isn’t the same this year. Off a bye, bet on the Seahawks to be an uber-prepared bunch. This game has blowout written all over it.

NFL Week 5 Betting Prediction: Seattle Seahawks -7 1/2
