The Dolphins were major players in the offseason war a year ago, while this time around it was the Patriots who made major upgrades and are in position to make a run at the Super Bowl.

Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill looked ready to jump forward a year ago, but the Dolphins were a major bust. Tannehill didn’t get a lot of support, with opponents taking away top receiving talent Mike Wallace, and Tannehill not getting a lot of support from a depleted offensive line, getting sacked 58 times.

The team added some beef to its offensive line in the offseason, and replaced offensive coordinator Mike Sherman with Bill Lazor, who had a successful year as the quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia, helping groom Nick Foles, while also studying under Chip Kelly.

The Dolphins will still take a hit along both lines, as starting center Mike Pouncey is slated to miss time following offseason hip surgery, and Dion Jordan, who was selected No. 3 overall by the Dolphins a year ago, is serving a suspensions for a violation of the performance-enhancing drug policy.

There setting is far more optimistic in New England, where quarterback Tom Brady appears poised for a bounce back year. Brady will be aided by the healthy return of some of his top weapons.

Rob Gronkowski, Danny Amendola, and Shane Vereen will all be on the field to start the year.

On defense, the Patriots have a chance to be special. Head coach Bill Belichick’s main focus has always been on taking away an opponent’s top offensive weapon, and he now has brought in the best man for that job.

The Patriots added Darrelle Revis, a top cornerback who gave the team so many fits while playing on the other side of the ball as a member of the New York Jets. If Belichick can get Revis to return the form that made him so dominant for so many years, watch out.

The defense also gets a boost in the form of some players who are returning from injury. Linebacker Jerod Mayo has been one of the best in the league at his position for so many years, and he figures to hit the ground running.

Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork will also start the season healthy, and has been a key cog along the Patriot defensive line for years.

Free Free Miami vs. New England Pick:

The Patriots have a chance to make an early statement in the division with a big victory in this contest. With a major talent edge, and facing a Dolphins team that doesn’t defend their home turf well, expect the Patriots to run away with this one.

The Dolphins are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight games played in Week 1, and they are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games against AFC East opponents.

The 4* NFL Play: New England -4.5
