The Kansas City Chiefs will look to build on a terrific Week 4 effort when they travel to San Francisco this Sunday to take on the 49ers who themselves had a very nice Week 4 performance. Both teams have some work to do in order to get back to their 2013-2014 form but both look to be taking steps in the right direction. Alex Smith is coming off his best game this year and should be a motivated guy to better his former team.

Chiefs

It is tough to say whether it was Kansas City being that good or New England being that bad on Monday night but a 41-14 beat down of the Patriots opened my eyes. Everything was clicking on Monday night – the running game was off the charts with a returning Jamaal Charles and the passing game was efficient and effective all night long. KC is now 3-1 ATS this year despite being road underdogs in Miami and Denver.

The recipe for success in the NHL is simple – run the ball and play good defense and that is exactly what the Chiefs are doing right now. Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis look like the best running back tandem in the game – by far (207 combined yards against the Pats) and the defense made the New England defense look awfully vanilla.

The Chiefs passing game is back to its efficient self as well. Alex Smith has completed a terrific 76% of his passes the last two weeks and went 20-for-26 for 248 yards and three TDs against the Patriots and with the presence of Dwayne Bowe and emerging star Travis Kelce the ceiling for the Chiefs offense looks very high at the moment. They are as complete as they have been in a while – a good sign for all you Chiefs fans.

The KC defense is coming off one of its best games this year – three sacks, a forced fumble and two interceptions against Brady and the boys. The Chiefs pass rush is absolutely no joke and figures to be a handful for Colin Kaepernick and company.

49ers

Speaking of Colin Kaepernick – it was only two games ago that he threw four interceptions – don’t think that fact isn’t lost on the KC secondary. He did play better against the Eagles last week but something still seems a little off with the 49ers offense. Kaepernick has been OK this year but will certainly benefit from…

A return to the running game played a big part in San Francisco’s 25-21 win over Philadelphia last week – the 49ers will have to continue to pound Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde in order to be successful. The running game has woken up (218 yards rushing last week) – and that’s a great sign for the 49ers heading into Week 5. Kansas City has been giving up a ton of yards on the ground so far this season – look for the Niners to run early and often!

A much maligned 49ers defense has been good this season – they really came together and peaked last week holding the potent Eagles offense to 213 total yards. San Francisco will have its hands full trying to contain Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis but the Niners’ strength on defense has been stopping the run – second in the NFL heading into this week, allowing about 70 yards per game. Keep in mind that this is a unit held LeSean McCoy completely in check last week.

NFL Week 5 Betting Trends

• Over is 8-3 in KC last 11 games overall.
• Under is 34-16-1 in KC last 51 games on grass.
• SF are 29-13-1 ATS in their last 43 games on grass.

The Kansas City Chiefs looked awfully good last week but that was at Arrowhead where they have a distinct advantage. On the road against a confident 49ers team will be different. Bet on San Francisco loading up to stop the run while having success themselves running the ball. Last week was an indication of what the 49ers SHOULD look like – expect a similar effort this week. Frank Gore will be a difference maker this week as will San Francisco’s defensive front.

NFL Week 5 Betting Prediction: 4* Play on San Francisco 49ers -6
