Conversely, the home-team Jags are perhaps even worse than most thought they’d be, but the emergence of Cleveland pivot Brian Hoyer at least makes this game compelling.

Browns

At the beginning of the season, Browns fans and the media were ostensibly counting down the minutes until buzz-worthy rookie QB Johnny Manziel would usurp the starter’s job from Hoyer.

After an admirable home win last week against arch-rival Pittsburgh, this is no longer the case. Hoyer is managing the games well and is helped along by an effective running game, spearheaded by Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell.

Cleveland’s defense has been pretty bad, but the Browns have found a way to score enough points to mitigate that en route to a 3-2 record this season.

If the first six weeks of the campaign have been any indication, the Jaguars should be a pushover opponent.

A further piece of good news for the Browns is the return to health of TE Jordan Cameron, a dangerous weapon who busted out last week against the Steelers (102 receiving yards, TD). He’s been bothered with a shoulder injury but he seems to be progressing, and when the club’s best receiving options are Andrew Hawkins and Taylor Gabriel, that’s a great sign.

Cleveland can also be encouraged that after the woeful Jags, its upcoming schedule includes Oakland and Tampa Bay in succession. The Browns could (and maybe even should) reel off three consecutive wins.

For the Jags at this point, the aim is to further acclimatize rookie pivot Blake Bortles to the NFL, while seeing what pieces fit for the future, and which don’t.

Jags

Jacksonville will almost certainly get a high first-round pick in next year’s Draft, so Jags brass need to recognize the key pieces that will get this club back to contending.

In the present, it means the home team could realistically fall to 0-7. Jacksonville’s offense is virtually non-existent (23rd in the league in passing, dead last in rushing) and opponents also torch the Jags through the air (31st).

Ultimately, if Bortles keeps playing well by rookie standards, it will offer the Jaguars and their fans a glimmer of hope for the future.

Cleveland native Hoyer and the duo of RBs should make hay against a weak opponent in Florida on Sunday afternoon.
