One of the two remaining undefeated teams, the Cincinnati Bengals head to Gillette Stadium this week to take on the New England Patriots – a team that seems to be slipping quickly out of the top tier of NFL teams. The Bengals enjoyed a bye last week while the Pats were humiliated on Monday night by the Kansas City Chiefs. Is it bounce back time for New England or will the Bengals continue their impressive run up the AFC ladder this week?

Bengals

There is not a whole lot going wrong for the Cincinnati Bengals at the moment! At 3-0 the team had an extra week to prepare for one of the teams that most thought they would have to leapfrog to get to the AFC Championship game. Cincinnati is putting it all together – on defense and on offense with the only apparent question being – have they peaked too soon?

Cincinnati’s offense has been sensational under the leadership of Andy Dalton – whom there were a fair share of questions about before the season started. The questions have been answered in spades thus far ad Cinci has the 11th ranked passing game and the 15th ranked running game in the NFL – they are 11th in total offense in the league. They are as balanced a team as there is in the AFC right now – dangerous whoever touches the ball.

Andy Dalton is not only slinging it (722 yards in three games) but he is also taking care of the ball. He has just one interception thus far in the young season – that INT was thanks to a tipped ball! AJ Green and Mohamed Sanu have been terrific and Marvin Jones could make his season debut this week – not good if you are a Pats fan! The Pats weren’t great against the pass last week – they allowed Alex Smith 236 yards and three TDS!

Cincinnati has some weapons out of the backfield as well – Gio Bernard and rookie Jeremy Hill haven’t exactly exploded just yet but it is just a matter of time before they get going. If you saw what Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis did to New England last week, you’d have to think that this may be their week!

Defensively Cincinnati is near the top of the league in a ton of statistical categories. They should dominate a Patriots offense that has shown they are not quite in sync after four games.

Patriots

Ugh! Where to start with the Patriots! Blame the crowd noise at Arrowhead, blame the poor play of New England’s offensive line or blame the lack of reliable weapons at Tom Brady’s disposal – the Patriots just look awful! New England was humiliated in Week 4 on both sides of the ball – zero aspects in the Patriots game left any reason for optimism!

Well – there is home field that New England has taken full advantage of the last few years!

New England will definitely have to tighten up on defense – they were shredded by KC to the tune of over 300 yards in the first half and 450 yards total in the 21-14 loss – including 200 yards on the ground! With a hot Bengals offense coming to town, it is hard to imagine a much maligned secondary showing up and a non-existent pass rush to right itself in just six days.

At least there is Tom Brady – right? Not so fast. Brady has been a shell of his former self and is coming off a game in which he threw two interceptions, completed 14 of 23 passes and looked utterly clueless on the football field. A lack of protection and a serious absence of weapons have Brady looking average – COME BACK WES WELKER!!

NFL Week 5 Betting Trends

• CIN are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games in Week 5.
• CIN are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 vs. AFC.
• CIN are 20-8-1 ATS in their last 29 games overall.
• NE are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games in Week 5.
• NE are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 home games.
• Over is 6-2 in NE last 8 games in October.

The Bengals haven’t won at Foxborough in eight years and the Pats have gone 10-0 in their last 10 home games. That said this game looks like an absolute blowout on paper for the visitors oddly enough. Cincinnati is better in every aspect of the game right now.

Off a short week with seemingly no answers on the horizon, expect the Patriots to struggle again and for the Bengals to make yet another huge statement.
