Bengals

Cincinnati really looked like a darling after the first few weeks of the season, but an injury to their star wideout may disrupt things a little. Carolina, meanwhile, still hopes to find its consistency for the 2014 campaign.

A toe injury for all-everything WR A.J. Green looks more serious than it was initially assessed; along with fellow WR Marvin Jones being on the shelf, it doesn’t bode well for QB Andy Dalton and the Bengals’ passing attack.

The team has been lucky that WR Mohamed Sanu has emerged, because the depth has certainly taken a hit. The offense is balanced with RB Gio Bernard being as functional a starter as you can find in the league these days, but when Dalton isn’t throwing consistent TDs – the Bengals aren’t nearly as effective.

Green is far and away Dalton’s favorite target, so it’s very much a loss for Cincy.

Panthers

The Panthers have also been crushed with injuries, though it’s been with their RB unit. Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert and DeAngelo Williams are all dinged up, so desperate Carolina is going with a committee of Darrin Reaves and recently-signed Chris Ogbonnaya in the backfield.

Carolina’s offense was already at somewhat of an impasse with the lack of targets for QB Cam Newton. The teal and black jettisoned basically all the WRs in the offseason, including still-awesome veteran Steve Smith.

The Panthers drafted physical freak Kelvin Benjamin from Florida State, who should still turn out to be a good No. 1 receiver, but except for trusty TE Greg Olsen, there’s not much for Newton to work with.

Carolina is coming off a nice win last week versus Chicago, but before that it looked miserable against two AFC North opponents, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. At 3-2, the Panthers are still leading the (so far) lousy NFC South, so there’s no need for panic if some of the RBs can get back in the fold.

The Bengals got burned last week courtesy of Rob Gronkowski and Tim Wright, New England’s TE duo. That might bode well for Olsen having a big day against the Bengals “D”.

NFL Week 6 Gambling Trends

* Under is 11-4 in CAR last 15 games overall.
* CIN are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 home games.
* CIN are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall.

As far as Carolina’s defense is concerned, the Panthers must get the run defending in order. After having a stellar defense a year ago, Carolina ranks near the bottom of the league in run defense, and the absence of DE Greg Hardy due to suspension is keenly felt.

All the same, I like the chances of Olsen and Benjamin having a big day, Newton putting up an inspired performance, and Carolina pulling the upset in “The Jungle”.
