The Detroit Lions host the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field on Sunday in Week 5 of the NFL season. The Bills made a big announcement this past week as they announced they are making a switch at quarterback, benching 2013 first round pick EJ Manuel in favor of veteran journeyman Kyle Orton.

The Bills made the move at quarterback because they feel like the roster they currently have constructed is capable of making the postseason, and with the New England Patriots looking vulnerable, this could be their best shot in a while.

That’s not surprising that the team’s brass would feel that way given that they made the kind of move team’s do when they feel they are a piece or two away, moving up in the draft to bring in wide receiver Sammy Watkins out of Clemson.

Manuel completed 53 percent of his passes over the previous two games, both resulting in Bills losses. On the season, he’s thrown five touchdowns and three interceptions. In 14 pro games, he’s thrown 12 interceptions.

As for Orton, he’s not going to win the team any games, but instead will serve as a caretaker for the offense. It will be on the Bills’ running game to move the ball and leave Orton with short situations to convert.

That’s a strategy that may not work well against a strong Lions front seven that has been terrific against the run over the last two seasons.

As for the Lions, they’ll rely on just the opposite – moving the ball through the air. Quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 24-of-34 passes for 293 yards and a pair of touchdowns passes in helping Detroit to its second straight win. Star wide receiver Calvin Johnson was limited in that one by an ankle injury, and hauled in only two passes for 12 yards.

Free Detroit vs. Buffalo Pick:

The Bills are an underrated squad that has been held back by quarterback play. If Orton can hold his own under center, this will be a dangerous Bills squad. While the Lions have done a fine job of moving the ball, particularly at home, the Bills have a way of keeping things close, and that’s what they do here.

Additionally, the under in this game is curiously low, and while that may tempt some to play on the over, if the Bills defense does give the Lions some trouble on offense, we could see this one stay under the number. The Bills certainly do their part on offense, leaning heavily on their ground game and often settling for field goals.

The Bills are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a loss.

The under is 4-0 in the Bills’ last four games overall, and it is 6-1 in the Lions’ last seven games overall.
