The 49ers absolutely need a win to stay in the NFC playoff hunt. The Raiders need a win just to prove that their Week 12 win against Kansas City wasn’t the fluke of the year.

Both teams will be motivated – so who wins? Let’s break it down.

49ers

Let’s face it folks – the San Francisco 49ers don’t look anything like the Super Bowl contender that they fancied themselves at the beginning of the year. Last week the team was humiliated on home turf in a 19-3 loss to arch rival Seattle.

A common theme has emerged in the Bay Area – Colin Kaepernick continues to struggle and those struggles are bringing the team down. Last week was a new low for Kaepernick – he passed for just 121 yards and was picked off twice in the loss. We will give him a bit of a mulligan because of the fact he was facing his kryptonite Seattle but he was largely ineffective the week before against a brutal Washington defense as well.

All together the 49ers are 25th in the NFL – scoring an average of just 19.2 points per game – incredible considering the talent on this club! Vernon Davis has disappeared, Michael Crabtree is nowhere to be seen and Stevie Johnson’s talents have largely been wasted all season long. The running game hasn’t been a whole lot better!

At least the 49ers defense is still doing its part! Through all of the bad they held the Seahawks to just one offensive TD last week.

The Niners get a crack at a brutal Oakland offense that failed to score one point against the Rams last week.

Raiders

We all thought that the Raiders were about to turn things around after a win against the Chiefs in Week 12… then Week 13 happened in which they got destroyed 52-0 by the Rams. Ugh! Absolutely nothing went right for Oakland as they lost all good will they gained. They slid back to the conversation of the worst teams the NFL has seen in quite some time. The chore this week won’t be any easier – the 49ers come to town – motivated and desperate to stay in the playoff hunt.

The Raiders defense was perhaps the most disappointing part of the Week 13 loss. A week after holding Jamaal Charles down the Chiefs allowed Tre Mason a staggering 117 yards and two TDs. Shawn Hill was made to look like a top tier quarterback and the Rams unflattering rushing offense was made to look like one of the best in the game. Oakland’s defense had been a “strength” this year, if you can call it that but they completely unraveled last week.

The Oakland offense was brutal last week as well. Derek Carr was terrible – he is now 32nd in the NFL in passing and has the task of facing a 49ers defense that has been among the best in the NFL again. It’s not like Carr is getting any help from the running game – they are averaging 72.5 yards per game – bad! Hopes are that Latavius Murray can return from a concussion this week – he looks like the only serviceable offensive threat for the Raiders offense.

He is still highly questionable with a concussion – if Murray doesn’t play Oakland is dead in the water.

NFL Week 14 Betting Trends

• Over is 7-2 in SF last 9 games in December.
• SF are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 road games.
• OAK are 2-15 ATS in their last 17 games in Week 14.
• OAK are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.
• OAK are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games on grass.

The 49ers are 4-2 ATS on the road this season while the Raiders are 2-2 ATS in their last four home games. Simply put there isn’t a whole lot to like with Oakland’s overall game.

NFL Week 14 Betting Prediction:

The 49ers aren’t that impressive themselves but if they let the Raiders hang around they don’t deserve to be in the playoff conversation.

San Francisco 49ers -8

Consider Sunday’s game a gift to the 49er nation – they will roll Sunday and restore some faith in their playoff chances.
