There were several questions surrounding both the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers going into last week’s game. While the Niners may have answered many of THEIR questions, some new ones arose in the Windy City.

San Francisco came out and soundly beat the Dallas Cowboys 28-17 in week 1, showing that the team’s defense did not have the issues everyone predicted they had. Instead, they took a potent offense and held them to two scores.

It was the opposite for the Bears, though, whose usually potent offense let them down en-route to a 23-20 loss in overtime to the Buffalo Bills. Jay Cutler vowed that the offense would correct those mistakes by this week.

Bears

The Bears had their chances against the Bills, but couldn’t find a way to put it together. Jay Cutler, despite going 34 of 49 for 349 yards and 2 touchdowns, threw two huge interceptions in the game. Those interceptions led to 10 points in Buffalo’s favor.

Matt Forte was the workhorse on the offense, rushing 17 times for 82 yards while adding 8 catches for 87 yards, bringing his game total to 169 yards of total offense. Brandon Marshall had 8 receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown while Alshon Jeffery had 5 grabs for 71 yards.

News out of practice this week, though, is that both Marshall (ankle) and Jeffery (hamstring) sat out practice and are questionable for Sunday’s tilt. Should they not play, Matt Forte will likely see more of a workload.

On defense, Ryan Mundy led the team with 7 tackles. Chris Conte had an interception and a pass defended for the Bears while Willie Young was the lone player to get to E.J. Manuel. As a unit, they held Manuel to 173 yards passing. But they also allowed 193 yards on the ground…

49ers

The San Francisco 49ers opened their season in Jerry’s World and handily beat the Cowboys. Between injuries and suspensions, there were worries about how the Niner defense would hold up. Three interceptions, three sacks, two forced fumbles, 7 pass defenses and a defensive touchdown later, the worries have dissipated.

Three guys led the team with 6 tackles apiece: Patrick Willis (6 tackles, 1 pass defense), Antoine Bethea (6 tackles, 1 pass defense) and Justin Smith (6 tackles, 2 sacks.) Ahmad Brooks added a sack to the mix while Chris Culliver had an interception that he returned for a touchdown.

Colin Kaepernick was 16 of 23 for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns. Anquan Boldin led the team with 8 receptions for 99 yards while TE Vernon Davis had 4 grabs for 44 yards and 2 touchdowns.

On the ground, Frank Gore led the way with 16 carries for 66 yards and Carlos Hyde made his NFL debut with a touchdown on 50 yards rushing. With his 66 yards, Frank Gore is now in the 10,000 rushing yards club.

NFL football Over/Under handicapping trends

  •  Over is 4-1 in Bears last 5 games overall
  •  Over is 12-3 in Bears last 15 road games
  •  Over is 4-1 in Bears last 5 vs. NFC
  •  Over is 5-1 in 49ers last 6 home games vs. a team with a losing road record
  •  Over is 9-3 in 49ers last 12 vs. a team with a losing record

Week 2 NFL Over/Under Prediction

In a normal scenario, I would call this a defensive, low scoring game. With San Francisco’s defense almost able to score as freely as its offense, it makes it difficult. Not only that, but the Bears have stockpiled offensive weapons, going more against their traditional defensive juggernaut approach.

With Marshall and Jeffery both ailing in this one, the Bears will be playing from behind and passing…a lot. And the Niner defense will be waiting.
