Red-Hot Broncos Face Ice Cold Ravens in Week 15

Division leaders clash in Baltimore Sunday as the Denver Broncos, winners of eight straight games take on the suddenly struggling Baltimore Ravens, losers of two straight games ahead of this Week 15 showdown. While the Broncos have been impressive on both sides of the ball the last couple of months the Ravens have been slightly underwhelming as demonstrated by their two straight defeats.

How about them Broncos? The hottest team in the NFL has everything going at the moment – the passing game headed by Peyton Manning, the running game with Knowshon Moreno and the defense are all clicking making Denver a team that absolutely nobody wants to play down the stretch.

The Denver offense has exceeded expectation so far this year – we all knew that they would be improved but nobody could have predicted their elite status. Denver is the second highest scoring team in the NFL with 28.85 points per game; they own the 6th best passing attack and the league’s 20th ranked running game. Peyton Manning has completed 68.3 percent of his passes with 30 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while being sacked 19 times. Knowshon Moreno is averaging 3.6 yards per carry in relief of the injured Willis McGahee. Demarayius Thomas has 74 catches and eight touchdowns, Eric Decker has 64 catches and eight touchdowns, and Jacob Tamme has 49 catches. Denver is balanced, they are cohesive and they are plain scary on the offensive side of the ball.

Defensively, Denver is top 10 in almost every statistical category. The Broncos are allowing 19.77 points per game – 4th best in the NFL, 93.69 rushing yards – 6th in the league, and 215.69 passing yards – 7th in the league with 15 interceptions and 39 sacks. With Manning controlling time of possession and giving the team early leads, the defense has operated with impunity all season long. Peyton Manning with a defense? It couldn’t get any better for you Broncos fans!

The Baltimore Ravens have been ravaged by injuries and inconsistent play as of late and have fallen back in the standings as a result. The offense is struggling to find an identity at times and the defense is really starting to show their age.

The Ravens enter Sunday’s important clash with the 16th ranked passing game and the 17th ranked running game. But they are 9th in the NFL in scoring – 25.46 points per game. Joe Flacco has completed 60 percent of his passes with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions while being sacked 31 times. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Ray Rice is averaging 4.6 yards per carry with nine rushing touchdowns and he has 52 catches out of the backfield averaging 8.2 yards per catch. Anquan Boldin has 58 catches four touchdowns, Dennis Pitta has 50 catches and five touchdowns, and Torrey Smith has 43 catches and seven touchdowns. They have been OK but have been seriously inconsistent so far. Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron was fired this week as well which speaks to the dysfunction of the offensive unit.

Defensively the Ravens are a far cry from where most expected this season. Injuries to Terrell Suggs and Ray Lewis have contributed for sure. There is a chance that Lewis returns to the field this week however to provide a huge boost in leadership to his team. Currently Baltimore is a surprising 23rd against the pass and 25th versus the run. With Denver’s potent offense coming to town, it is hard to imagine the Ravens improving on these disappointing numbers.

Betting Prediction:

• Denver is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
• Denver is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games on the road
• The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Denver’s last 5 games when playing Baltimore
• The total has gone OVER in 7 of Denver’s last 10 games on the road
• Baltimore is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games when playing at home against Denver
• Baltimore is 16-1 SU in its last 17 games at home
• The total has gone OVER in 5 of Baltimore’s last 6 games at home
• The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Baltimore’s last 5 games when playing Denver

Baltimore is 3-7-1 against the spread in their last 11 games overall and 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games which is evidence of their unflattering play. Denver is on a roll – I can’t see the Ravens slowing them down. The key to this game will be defense – the Broncos should be able to generate stops against Baltimore’s inconsistent unit while I am not sure that the Ravens defense will be able to do the same against the Broncos. I am on Denver this week – it has been a while since they let me down!

Pick: Denver Broncos -2 1/2
