The Dallas Cowboys are close – a play here and there and we may be talking about them challenging the New York Giants for the Division lead. I will spare you all of the clichés about being close. Red Zone efficiency, costly mistakes at inopportune times and even an injury in the backfield have contributed to Dallas’s early season woes.

Dallas has been guilty of the third most turnovers per game in the NFL – 2.38 which has directly affected their overall record.

Dallas comes into Sunday’s game with the 3rd ranked passing offense – 299.13 yards per game and the 29th ranked rushing offense – just 83.38 yards per game. Yes, DeMarco Murray’s absence has made a difference. Don’t expect to see him back this week either. The Cowboys have been able to move the ball through the air but a stat that jumps out? They are 26th in the NFL in scoring – just 18.75 points per game. Translation – you can march up and down the field all you want but if you don`t put the ball in the end zone, it doesn`t mean a thing.

The Dallas defense has been OK this year – they just haven`t had a whole lot to work with because of their offense coughing up the ball at such inopportune times. Rob Ryan’s squad is 5th against the pass and 15th versus the run. The D hasn`t been the problem and they could use a little support.

Perhaps the only other team that can rival the turmoil of the Cowboys is the Philadelphia Eagles. Has Michael Vick been benched yet? Is Andy Reid still the coach? Have they hired a new Defensive Coordinator? What about the brutal offensive line? The Eagles need to turn their season around quickly or more than a few will be looking for a job at season`s end! The Eagles have had the same problem as the Cowboys. In fact they are ties with Dallas when it comes to turning the ball over – 2.38 times per game! They own the league`s 14th ranked pass offense and the NFL`s 10th best rushing offense. They just can`t hold onto the ball!

Michael Vick has struggled completing 58.3 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions while being sacked 27 times. LeSean McCoy is averaging 4.3 yards per carry with two touchdowns and he has caught 30 passes for three touchdowns. DeSean Jackson has 37 catches and two touchdowns to lead the Eagles, Brent Celek has 33 catches, and Jeremy Maclin has 28 catches and three touchdowns.

Defensively, Philadelphia has been just average – the middle of the pack in almost every statistical category except for sacks – they are an uncharacteristic 30th in the NFL in that regard. Forcing turnovers has also been an issue but like their Cowboys counterparts they aren`t getting a whole lot of help.

Betting Prediction

• The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Dallas’s last 8 games on the road
• The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Dallas’s last 11 games
• The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Dallas’s last 7 games when playing Philadelphia
• Dallas is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games on the road
• The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Philadelphia’s last 7 games when playing Dallas
• The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Philadelphia’s last 10 games
• Philadelphia is 9-4 SU in its last 13 games when playing at home against Dallas
• Philadelphia is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games at home

This game boils down to – who do you trust more Michael Vick or Tony Romo? For me, it is Tony Romo. At least the Cowboys have looked competitive in their losses. Take the road team to pile on the criticism in Philadelphia – it`s going to get ugly in the City of Brotherly Love!

Pick: Dallas Cowboys -1
