Arizona Cardinals vs. Carolina Panthers Preview

The Cardinals (4-9) won their last game, which snapped their 7-game losing streak and they will look to get their first 2-game winning streak of the season with a win over the league’s worst team in the Panthers (1-12). Hard to believe, but NFL lines actually have Carolina as 2.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 38.

In their last games the Panthers were crushed by the Atlanta Falcons 31-10 while the Cardinals finally has a good game in a 43-13 win over the Denver Broncos.

Not only have these teams been playing bad this season, but they have also been bad teams to wager on with Arizona at 4-9 ATS and Carolina at 3-10 ATS.

The Panthers have beaten the Cardinals 6 straight times and last season they rushed 270 yards in a 34-21 win in Arizona.

Arizona blew up for 43 points last week after scoring a combined 43 points in their previous 4 games. The Cardinals and their struggling rushing offense had a great game with 211 rushing yards and rookie QB John Skelton was decent going 15/30 for 146 yards and even though he did not throw a TD pass he was not picked off and he was not sacked.

Skelton may have a tougher time this week because as bad as things have been for the Panthers this season their pass defense ranks a respectable 10th in the league. However, their rushing D only ranks 25th Arizona RB Tim Hightower had his best game of the season last week with 148 rushing yards with 2 TD and if he can have another good game it will take a lot of pressure of Skelton. The Carolina run defense has allowed 9 rushing TD’s in their last 3 games. Football betting

The Panthers are also having QB issues, as rookie Jimmy Clausen will likely get the start even though he has the lowest QB rating in the league and he has not thrown a TD since week 4. Since week 4 he has 5 picks and he has not passed for over 200 yards once this season. Maybe it would be better if the Panthers lose so they can stay on track for the top pick in the draft to take QB Andrew Luck from Stanford.

There also may be some bad blood in the Carolina locker room, as after Clausen apologized to LB Jon Beason for another weak offensive performance (14/27 107 yards 0 TD 1 INT) last week WR Steve Smith stated, “You should apologize to the people in the huddle with you. He has a lot to learn. He ain’t at Notre Dame anymore, that’s for sure.”

One bright spot for the Panthers recently has been the play of RB Jonathan Stewart (531 yards 2 TD), who has rushed for 323 yards in his last 3 games including 133 last week. In 2 of those games he averaged at least 7 yards per carry and he will get a lot of touches in this game. He will likely have another big game facing a Cardinals rushing defense that only ranks 30th in the league.

The team that can run the ball will have the advantage in this game and I think that edge goes to Stewart and the Panthers. However, I think Arizona will carry the momentum they got from last week and play well and while I would not say they will win they will at least cover the spread.

Betting Trends

Arizona is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as a road underdog and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.
Carolina is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games.

This season Arizona has an Over/Under record of 8-5 and Carolina is at 6-6-1. In the last 5 Panthers; game the total has gone Over 4 times and even though neither team has a good defense both have a poor offense and I would stay away from the O/U bet in this match up.

Pick: Cardinals +2.5
