2008 Record: 9-7
ATS: 9-7

Were the Arizona Cardinals really the best team in the NFC last year? Or were they a decent team that caught fire at the right now? I’ll take the former.

The Cardinals finished the season just 9-7 but six of their wins came against their three division mates, who combined for just 13 wins. And the Cardinals couldn’t even win a road game outside of their division.

Like many of the NFC teams that have made the Super Bowl this decade, the Cardinals are bound to come back down to Earth this year. On offense, they return the same unit but quarterback Kurt Warner is a year older and there are still question marks in regards to the running game. Is Beanie Wells the answer? Can Tim Hightower carry the load?

Warner put up monster numbers in a contract year last season while playing in all 16 games. Keep in mind that it was the first time that Warner made it through a full season since 2001.

On both sides of the ball, the Cardinals will have to deal with lots of losses on the sidelines. Both offensive and defensive coordinators are gone as well as many assistants.

The Cardinals also lost some personnel on defense, including guys like Rod Hood and Antonio Smith. Although that’s not major, when you combined that with some of their disgruntled stars, like Anquan Boldin and Darnell Dockett, both of whom want new contracts, it just lays more ominous seeds.

The Cardinals did play well in the playoffs but the general consensus is that they overachieved. With lots of changes to deal with heading into this season, combined with the fact that the entire NFC West division will be stronger and the Cardinals should go back to being their typical, below .500 selves.

Super Bowl Odds: +3300

Conference Odds: +1500

NFC South Odds: +140

Warner will move over for Leinhart at some point this season which could disrupt their chances of repeating. I think they are too talented offensively to be stoppped in the West. The defense is improved but this is a team that needs to score often to win.

Gonna be an ugly year in the desert. Expectations will be high and won’t be met, thus forcing Warner to answer questions on why God doesn’t want the Cards to succeed. A sub 500 record is certain as is the bitching between offensive superstars. The chemistry that propelled the Cards last year will fizzle and Warner’s ugly wife will have to get used to seeing her hubby on crutches each and every Sunday.
