2015 AFC Conference Champion Odds – NFL Handicapping Picks

2015 AFC Preview and Predictions

Training camps are in full swing and the first of the NFL preseason games is in the books – Football is officially back baby and it is about time! With the dawning of a new season comes a sense of optimism for all teams in the NFL – everyone has a chance at this point of the season.

But on paper the AFC looks like a three team race – the Broncos, the Patriots and the Colts are the class off the Conference heading into the 2014-2015 season.

Let’s take a look at the odds for every team and discuss whether or not it will be one of the top dogs emerging or whether or not there is a sleeper offering some good value ahead of what is sure to be a typically scintillating season.

Denver Broncos Odds to win 2015 AFC Championship 9/4

The Broncos are clearly the best team in the AFC on paper and have snuck ahead of the Seahawks as favorites to win it all in February – their biggest need was addressed in spades during the offseason. DeMarcus Ware and Aqib Talib have been added to a defense that was clearly the Achilles heel of the team – exposed badly by the Seahawks in the championship game. Ware and Vonn Miller now make up a pass rush that should rival any in the NFL – the additions of safety TJ Ward and Talib make up a formidable secondary.

Offensively Erik Decker and Knowshon Moreno are gone but the Broncos should still possess one of the most impressive units in the game – not quite the record setting unit they had last year but good enough to score more than their share – Peyton Manning alone makes the Broncos a favorite.

The only questions here are Peyton Manning’s health and whether or not the Broncos have a good enough running game to create the balance necessary for a Championship team. My guess is YES.

New England Patriots Odds to win 2015 AFC Championship 3/1

The combination of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady has been magical the last decade or so – they will be right in the thick again – almost guaranteed. Adding to the intrigue of this year’s Pats is the continued rivalry between Brady and Manning and the fact that the defense is bound to be better with the return of some of the injured stars and the addition of Darrelle Revis.

The Patriots are a team that got to the AFC Championship game last year with a host of key injuries, most notably DE Tommy Kelly or DT Vince Wilfork. If these guys remain healthy, they along with Revis make up a very good defense.

Any slip by the Broncos will open the door for the Pats – a great team on paper and a squad that knows how to win!

Indianapolis Colts Odds to win 2015 AFC Championship 6/1

Any time you have Andrew Luck suiting up for you, there is a chance but like the Bears, the Colts lack the complete team needed to be a serious contender – the running game is a mystery along with the defense.

That said this is a team that plays in a weak division – the Colts could go 11-5 this year and earn a first round playoff bye. It’s pretty hard to trust Trent Richardson however and it is difficult to imagine this team being able to slow the Broncos and the Patriots when all is on the line.

Pittsburgh Steelers Odds to win 2015 AFC Championship 12/1
[soliloquy id=”82219″]
There is a serious drop-off after the three favorites in the AFC that’s for sure. The Steelers along with Ben Roethlisberger are fourth favorites. The Steelers play in the tough AFC North and lack the depth at every position to seriously compete – no aspect of their game particularly excites me.

Cincinnati Bengals Odds to win 2015 AFC Championship 16/1

The Bengals have been on the brink for years – they possess an ever-emerging defense and they have game changer AJ Green but do you trust Andy Dalton? I suppose if all the stars align Cinci could be an OK value pick but I, like many have no faith in Dalton.

Baltimore Ravens Odds to win 2015 AFC Championship 18/1

The Ravens are only a couple of years removed from a Championship so why is nobody talking about this team as a contender? Joe Flacco has regressed, Ray Rice seems like a shell of his former self and will he be forced to answer questions all season long about his “spat” with his wife. The absence of the leadership qualities of Ray Lewis has this team off my radar.

However, the Ravens are proof that peaking at the right time is as important as the talent on the field. Baltimore offers hope that anyone can knock off the favorites en route to a championship.

San Diego Chargers Odds to win 2015 AFC Championship 18/1

Improved in their first year coach Mike McCoy and have some interesting weapons on offense. That combined with a solid defense and the fact that the Chargers exorcised their December demons last year makes San Diego worth mentioning. They could be this year’s Ravens if all goes right.

Kansas City Chiefs 22/1
Houston Texans 28/1
Miami Dolphins 28/1
New York Jets 28/1
Cleveland Browns 33/1
Buffalo Bills 40/1
Tennessee Titans 40/1
Oakland Raiders 50/1
Jacksonville Jaguars 100/1
