2011 Regular Season Opponents

Mon, Sept. 12 @ Denver This old-school rivalry fills the slate on Monday night for the 2011 season’s opening weekend.

Sun, Sept. 18 @ Buffalo Oakland’s first two road games to open the season offer great chances for wins, as the run-heavy Raiders face two of the worst run “D” units in the entire NFL in Denver and Buffalo.

Sun, Sept. 25 NEW YORK The fanatical Bay Area die-hards may face a slap of reality when one of the conference’s better teams travels to Oakland in Week 3. If the Raiders are without free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha, even the Jets’ passing game might be prolific.

Sun, Oct. 2 NEW ENGLAND Hopefully the Raiders’ secondary deals with young Jets QB Mark Sanchez a week prior, as it will be a necessary tune-up for elite pivot Tom Brady and the perennially good Patriots.

Sun, Oct. 9 @ Houston Houston, Texas is not just a haven for humidity and traffic. If you’re a football fan (which, being in Texas, is more than likely) you have a penchant for head-scratching. What are you going to get out of your Texans from year to year?

Sun, Oct. 16 CLEVELAND The Raiders had an OK season in 2010, finishing at 8-8; if they want to improve to the happy side of .500, they must beat teams like the Browns at home in 2011.

Sun, Oct. 23 KANSAS CITY This should be an exciting divisional game. The rivalry between these two teams is exacerbated because both squads employ an emphasis on the run, though the styles differ markedly (Oakland’s power game vs. KC’s electric, quick-strike focus).

Sun, Oct.30 BYE

Sun, Nov. 6 DENVER The Broncos were awful last year, but they added a couple potential starters on defense (sure impact player in LB Von Miller and intriguing S Rahim Moore) via the Draft, which should help fix some of Denver’s woes.

Thurs, Nov. 10 @ San Diego Any time you have to play the most talented team in your division on short rest that week, you face a sizable challenge. Especially when said team features QB Philip Rivers, the elite quarterback that people don’t mention in discussions.

Sun, Nov. 20 @ Minnesota The Raiders have ten days to prepare for a trip from southern California to the Land of 10,000 Lakes, where the Silver and Black should be seizing the opportunity to nab a vulnerable Vikings team.

Sun, Nov. 27 CHICAGO The Bears have a douchey QB in Jay Cutler and don’t seem to do anything well except stop the run, yet this team won 11 games last year and made noise in the playoffs.

Sun, Dec. 4 @ Miami This trip to southern Florida is welcomed not only for the warmer weather, but the Dolphins are a team that can be had if Oakland continues to make strides like it did in 2010.

Sun, Dec. 11 @ Green Bay Basically take everything I said in the previous week’s analysis, and make it the exact opposite for this match-up. This has the potential to be a long, cold and dark Sunday for the visitors.

Sun, Dec. 18 DETROIT If Lions’ pivot Matthew Stafford doesn’t start showing promise soon, Lions fans should be as angry as Raiders fans – when they think about JaMarcus Russell.

Sat, Dec. 24 @ Kansas City This is a huge game for both teams, but especially for the visiting Raiders if they want to show the league that they aren’t pretenders in the AFC West.

Sun, Jan. 1 SAN DIEGO With or without Asomugha, the Raiders must find the bodies to cover the Chargers’ big, athletic receivers. Oakland should try and control the pace with its duo of RBs Darren McFadden and Michael Bush.
