Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 5-11 SU, 8-8 ATS
Projection this season – 7-9 (second in AFC West)

Guess we find out this season how much of the blame for the ridiculously poor product on the field for the last several years belonged to JaMarcus Russell.

Russell is finally gone and journeyman Jason Campbell is on board as the QB starter, and anyone paying even close to attention knows the Raiders played their best football last season when journeyman Bruce Gradkowski replaced Russell. So …

Campbell, who will operate with a half-decent backfield (Michael Bush and Darren McFadden), a poor offensive line and questionable wide receivers, is drawing rave reviews from owner/GM Al Davis, though the old man would probably praise Joe the Plumber after dealing with Russell’s lack of talent and poor work habits for a few years.

Davis even compares Campbell to former Raider Jim Plunkett (note: Davis also compared Russell to Plunkett) and says this Raider team stacks up favorably to the 1980 Oakland bunch that won the Super Bowl. Right.

The Raiders aren’t ready to contend for the playoffs, let alone the Super Bowl, but they are capable of winning a few more games than they did last year. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Richard Seymour has given the defensive line some stability and cornerback Asomugha Nmadi forces opposing offensive coordinators to change game plans, but there are just too many gaps defensively for the Raiders to be consistently good defenders.

(Last season only one team allowed more pass plays of 40 or more yards, and only one team allowed more running plays of 25 yards or more.) Despite it all, Oakland’s pass defense is its strength, with Nmadi on one side and Chris Johnson on the other.

And the D got a boost when Davis abandoned his habit of using his first-round draft choice on speedy wideouts and instead grabbed linebacker Rolando McClain.

Offensively, Campbell will need to make the adjustment from Washington’s West Coast offense to the more vertical game that the Raiders have employed for decades. Darrius Heyward-Bey reportedly is reportedly no longer treating balls like rattlesnakes, and Zach Miller is the best tight end in the AFC West when San Diego’s Antonio Gates calls in sick.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – With the Raiders nothing is a sure thing. This is a team that last season defeated Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Cincinnati, and lost to Cleveland, Washington and Kansas City. Go figure. There are enough winnable games on the schedule to make things interesting, but with a combustible coach (Tom Cable) and owner, it could just as easily go the other way.
